Default importing

Hi

I want to get a new sv650 and was thinking about getting one on import. Has anyone else done this? basically im looking for the cheapest way to get a naked svk3/k4, (isnt everyone?).

So is importing a good way to go? or can anyone recommend a good place to look for used sv's? ive looked at biketrader.com but nothing has cought my eye.

any links/sugestions etc much appriciated.

Thanks

btw if this is in the wrong place then feel free to move it ta.

Hi Dan

Got my naked SV just over 2 years ago from BAT Motorcycles. www.batmotorcycles.com. Service was ok - in hindsight probably paid a few hundred quid more than I should have, but bike has been fine - especially now i've had the alarm removed..more trouble than it's worth and drained the battery in the blink of an eye!

All their bikes are listed on line - bit of a schlap from where you are, but they specialise in imports. Haven't crossed the 'import sell-on' bridge yet, but mine is a nice example, so hopefully not too many problems.

Hope this helps!

Rob

sounds good, ill take a look.
In a copy of ride that i have they recon the resale value of an import in comparrison to a uk bike is about 10%. at least thats what i think it said.....

I'm guessing they don't import to order, but they might be able to recommend similar garages dealing in imports which are closer to you, so give them a bell.

If I had the choice again, I would buy UK, but alas it was love at first sight and I had to get it. No regrets. It's a great bike

I've just checked their site: with the prices they're asking for used SV's (£3495 - take your pick of age), I'm surprised they get anyone through their doors!

Wiltshire,
As per the 'Loss of Power' thread, be aware that imported models with carburretors don't have carb heaters fitted as standard which could give you trouble with carb icing if you ride in winter. I think this applies to the 03?? Someone will no doubt correct me if I'm wrong!

No carbs on the '03.

You can pick up an official UK SV650 K4 for £3799 OTR including first service free from George Whites Superbikes or Sturdey's Motorcycles and using their prices as a index most dealers close to you will match it as well.

Not sure how muhc you expect to save off that price with an import, imo its not worth importing if your not gonna save more than £500, which is nigh on impossible for an SV650 naked K4.

Food for thought

Carb heaters are not an issue on 03/04/05 models - they have fuel injection.
You will need UK (left-dip) headlights for a UK MoT (don't know how much of an issue this is for the naked bike - it's certainly an issue for the faired model)
Don't know if all imports will have the KPH / MPH switch facility that UK bikes have.

As Solid says - it's not really worthwhile at the moment.
I have an import* SK1, but I'd buy a UK machine now.

* no carb heaters - but no carb-icing either.
