Default Engine mounting bolt HELP PLEASE!!!!

I am in desperate need of some help....

I have a snapped engine mounting bolt on the left side of my bike (SK1 (the top one that you use for lowers brakcets)....I had ordered a new one plus one for the other side (just incase), went to collect them today, to find that they are the wrong ones, so after ranting and raving about my bike being off the road for another 4 days cos they cocked up.... they show me the Microfiche(?).. the part number for the bolt i want and the bolt they got are a perfect match... this bolt was far too big... about 3 times the size of the one that snapped... so where does that leave me...with no bolt... one snapped in my engine... new lowers that i cannot fit... and no idea what to do... the microfiche thing says it is an M10 by 215mm that is waaaaay too big..it is an M10.. but the thread starts about 4 or 5cm from the start of the bolt... but surley all the micro things say the same??

HELP ME PLEASE....

Have you got the old broken bolt out yet? I don't want to alarm you but I had to remove the engine to get this bolt out when mine snapped, luckily I had access to a workshop and time and effort to do it. I couldn't believe how difficult it was to remove this bolt, I had access to every fancy tool and in the end I had to drill it out and "helicoil" it, not a 5 minute job!
I hope that you have better luck!
As for the size of the bolt, one side is much longer than the other, perhaps they have given you the bolt for the wrong side of the engine!

i will have to drill it out as it snapped flush with the engine...oh yeah... and it is cross threaded... (my fault) and i ordered one for each side... and both that came were wrong... but correct according to the micro thing

Don't just assume that... You might be able to extract it with a big screw extractor, if you're lucky, alternatively a fully equipped garage might be able to spark abrade it, much less destructive than drilling it out if done right. Depends how badly the thread is damaged in both cases, though...

I agree with northwind, IMO drilling out the bolt would be a very last resort.
Try some stud extractors or specialised help/advice at the very least.

Is this a common problem?! It seems that everyone's either had this happen or has heard of it happening?!
Should I be checking for signs of stress? What are the warning signs, if there are any?

don't ask me... i couldn't even tell when i was cross threading it!!

I am sure that someone will be able to answer your question though....

Problem half solved... they found the correct bolt on another part of the micro thing... (or what they think is the right bolt) will find out in a few days..... now to try and

A. get the snapped bit out.
B. get the new one in
C and most importantly... Slap myself around the head for being so stupid..

Baggazee,

I don't know if it's a common problem, but I would imagine that the bolts dry out and then seize in place. They are bound to cycle through hot and cold. I'm going to service mine in the coming month so I might see about taking them out and lubing them with copperslip to try prevent this.

Deejay, have you taken a look at the manual or the diagrams here on the main site?

Well there was a parts fiche link on the main site, but I've just followed it to a dead end!

Try www.svrider.com and go to

-general info
-Complete Parts Microfiche as PDF files (1MB each) Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4

select part 1 from the 4 parts and it is around page 4 I think.
