Default Oil Filter Change with every oil change?

I'm about to put my bike ('04 SV650s) to bed for the winter. I've read the procedure in the manual and feel happy I can do it, without knackering the bike. I've just got a few queries about the oil:

I've read that when you change the oil you should change the filter, but is this only when you'd change the oil at a service (ie due to the amount of time it has been in there, as opposed to because you're changing the oil), or should you do it when changing the oil before storing the bike?

Also, I know you shouldn't "mix" oil types. Will residue left in after an oil change be a problem?

Any other considerations outside of what is mentioned in the manual? I'm going to put it under a "breathable" tarp/bike cover too. Any recommendations of brand/type for that?

Cheers!

You don't need to change the filter 'every' time you change you oil.... and the little bit left over will not do any harm... if your bothered about little old oil being in there.... then get engine flush....

hope this helps...

Don't use flushing oils. Modern engines and oils don't get dirty enough to warrant it, and it can cause more problems than it solves.

Personally I always change oil+filter, for the sake of a few quid why not? If you do a change every 3-4k miles, that's around 300lts of fuel, or £250 near enough, plus £100 worth of tyres gone, so what's another £8 or so for a filter?

Don't worry about the mixing issue, a small amount of residual oil in the engine will mix fine even if it's a different spec (mineral/semi-synth/synth). OK it's nice not to mix different oils, but a few percent won't matter.
