A word of warning ...
So there’s my brother out for a ride a couple of Sundays ago, with his mate and their associated girlfriends. Tony (the friend) is at the front on his Norton Commando – yes there ARE still a few of them running – his girlfriend is behind on her Kawasaki/Triumph (w650?) retro-thing, and my brother is last on his Moto Guzzi California with his ‘girly’ on the back.
As they toodle up this nice country A-road in a leisurely fashion, they notice a Suzuki Vitara coming the other way. The car slows down and moves toward the centre of the road indicating to turn right – it is clearly waiting to go into a driveway on the left. Usual reactions take over. Everyone slows down slightly to make sure the car driver has seen them. The car doesn’t move so everyone assumes everything’s OK and carries on. At the very last minute, the car decides to execute the right turn right in front of the Commando and, hey presto, brakes come on, swerve to the right and my friend hits the rear quarter of the Suzuki. One broken leg and one written-off Norton later, they all gather themselves together. After the dust settles they finally calm down enough to ask the dozy cow why she turned right. Apparently, she had the sun in her eyes and, whilst she waited momentarily to see if she could make-out what might be coming up the road, she came to the conclusion that she could not see a damn thing because the sun was low in the sky and completely blinding her … so she turned right anyway! So just bear that in mind the next time you think you’ve ‘got it all covered’. If the sun’s bright and behind you, you can (and should) expect ANYTHING to happen. |

Glad it was only a broken leg! I know someone who did same thing and hit a horse - she got done for it even though there was low winter sun etc

This is exactly the reason I upgradeed the bulbs in my GS driving lights to 100watts and now ride during the day as if it was dark switching main beam off and on.

Man Oh Man, A broken leg and a totaled Norton Commando. I'm glad you didn't tell us she was talking on her cellphone too. This is a very good point you brought out in regards to the setting sun. If the Norton had been a lorrie it would have really gotten her attention in an accident.
I hope the friend is doing well and gets back on the horse soon. Cheers, Richard |
