Hey,
Sorry to bring this topic up again. I ordered my slip on exhaust a few days ago and I plan to remove the downpipes when I fit it. While they are off, I think it is an opportune time to clean the downpipes. I did search for downpipe cleaning and it seemed that most people recommended 'Autosol'. This is a product I am un-aware of in Canada. What is this product? Is there some other names of this similar product? Anyone have some recommendations on how to clean my downpipes without damaging them? Thanks, Mitch |

Autosol is a metal polish, not a cleaner. I typically use warm water to wash off the loose debris from my pipes, then clean them up using a fine grade of wire wool. Finally i polish them with Autosol which gives a nice shine and some protection.

Hey Mitch,
They sell Autosol at Canadian Tire for around $10. It works great, but it's hard on the arms. |

Hey Curium,
Thanks. I think I will try the steal wool. I am still unsure of Autosol, will any metal polish work fine on the pipes? Thanks again, Mitch |

1 hour drive? Yikes!! Then again, there is something to be said for living in the country. I recently moved to a rural area and I like it. It is always strange to see people leave keys in their cars. Everyone in my neighborhood does it. Oh well, if you can, take some before and after piccys will you?

Okay Mitch here's what you do. Wash off the crap. Then use steel wool together with a metal polish like Autosol (or something like it) and just keep rubbing and rubbing till the corroded surface layer is eventually worn away. This will take forever BTW so be prepared to do this in several goes.
Now you should have a silver coloured pipe with a totally matt finish. If there are still marks on it then you need to go back to stage one. Get a long strip of rag (about a metre by 5 cm) and then (after liberally coating the header pipe with more Autosol) loop it round the pipe twice so that you are holding both ends of it. Now push and pull in long regular strokes so that the rag is forced round the pipe. Gradually move the rag up and down the pipe while you're doing this adding more Autosol every few minutes. After about two hours you'll genuinely have a mirror finish. Get a clean rag and wipe off any remains of the metal polish with a few vinegar strokes. ![]() ![]() Oh and you'll sweat a lot ![]() . |

Amway's metal cleaner is very good indeed, if you can get some. However, better still, is Lord Sheraton's Brass & Copper Polish available from the likes of Tesco - best thing I've used yet.
