Default Upgrade 650 - 1000: Same buzz?

Hi All

Need to consolidate 2 bikes into 1 due to house move, storage constraints, only being able to ride 1 bike at a time, etc..

So I'm thinking, sell the SV650S (Sept 02, blue, G-Force race can, double bubble screen, full fairing, red fox hugger, Top-Line undertray, etc. - anyone interested?) and then trade in my other bike (Ducati 600SS, 1996, appears to be un-sellable on the private market ) and "trade up" to an SV1000SK3 (seen one at the dealers where I bought my Duke 5 years ago: an '03 plate for £3,695 with 10k miles on). Based on this piece of genius, a couple of questions.....

1) is the SV1000 as good as the 650 generally, just a bit quicker?
2) what's the insurance premium hike likely to be over a 650 (I've full, protected NCB and am only a wimpy summer weekend biker)?
3) how much are mods like new cans, full fairing, etc. for a 2003 SV1000?
4) any other things I should know about / consider?

Many thanks!

I went from a 650 to a 1000 last year after 4 years on the 650.

The 1000 does everything that the 650 did, but quicker/smoother/better.

The acceleration is the biggest difference - the 650 needed to be worked a bit to get the best out of it, however the 1000 will just take off in any gear. If you do decide to knock down one or two gears on the 1000 then it sends your eyeballs to the back of your head.

It does not seem quite as 'chuckable' as the 650 was, but it is a bigger/heavier bike - the 180 section rear tyre probably accounts for a big part of that too.

Insurance is not too bad - I am 35, 4 years NCB, bike is garaged but not alarmed, 5000 miles per year - best quote was £250.

Prices for mods - depends what you go for - cans will be twice the price of a 650 , fairing lowers are about £400

Yer what he said.

The good thing about the cans is that you can get hold of a second hand pair of TL cans pretty cheep, just dont get arrow can though. Insurance is not to bad ether, Im paying just under £600 and being only 27 with 4 years ncb, garaged in london Isn't to bad.

And again.

Two very different bikes though, the 1000 is not a 650 with more go, everything is different, and better.

Having ridden both the naked and faired thous and 650's.

Although the SV1000 is no doubt an upgrade from the 650, it's character is somewhat different.

the SV650 is very light and nimble making the most of what it has it's a forgiving bike to ride and cheap on consumables, the thou uses a more planted line through corners and requires a bit more thought with the right paw, it'll also cost more to run, I'd go for a naked thou, as the faired just didn't do it for me.

In the world of the 1000's the SV feels a little too refined and is missing that raw edge a bit for my tastes, more naked than muscle bike, if you know what I mean?, but each to their own.

Saying all that it's an affordable 1000 cc V twin that works well, sounds good, and suspension is better quality than it's little brother.

Cheers Mark.
