It might be a bit harsh, but then again it's one of the constituent parts of WD40, which to be honest might be a better bet as the thin oil would also help to remove stubborn tar like deposits.

Ive just tried cleaning mine today with Paraffin. I need to get a paddock stand to do it properly as i was on my own and had to keep moving the bike to get to the chain. done the top bottom and front but need to do the rear of it which ill do once i get a paddock stand.
I then used wurth high performance chain oil once it was cleaned. |

I just take the rear wheel out. Place a paint-roller tray with paraffin under the swinging-arm and rotate the chain on the front sprocket pulling it through the paraffin with 1 hand while using a clean paint brush to clean it with the other hand.
Once all the links have been through once, I dry the chain with a clean, dry cloth. Leave it for 5 mins for any residue to evaporate before oiling up with cheap, 80W gear oil. Put the wheel back on and re-align the scottoiler. This way I get to give the wheel-rim and sproket a good clean with the paraffin too. Only draw-back is, after refitting the wheel, I have to clean the tyre surface with soapy water to ensure no oil is on the wheel. |

I use WD40 and some rags. Removing all the oil with parafin has never struck me as a good idea.
