I meant to post this earlier but forgot... On sunday I decided to take a look at the cheap rear caliper I got on Ebay- my old one's on the way out. This new one's alright lookling but quite corroded on the banjoes etc.
Pistons are rammed all the way in so I figure I'll hook it up to an MC and poke them out. Connect it up, got to undo the banjo, and it snaps at the start of the thread. Dang. OK then, moleys? Nope, won't grip at all, just chews up the remains. OK then, screw extractor? Seems the perfect application, since there's already a hole. Nope, snapped off. OK then, drill it out and use a bigger extractor? Nope, now I've got a screw extractor and the tip of a drill bit stuck in it. So I grind it down to the face of the caliper, but the extractor goes in too far, no dice. But here's where it really goes wrong. Ah-ha, I think, I can get at it from the back. Strip down caliper, remove piston (very very carefully with grips), take out seals, fill with penetrating oil, leave it a while. Now, get in behind the nipple up the bleed hole with a normal drill bit, and as it's reversed direction it only takes about ten seconds and the heat and movement shifts the nipple and it drops out. Beautiful... Except, hang on... Bleed nipples work by pressing their bases against a plate in the caliper, which I've just drilled through to try and remove it- in other words, I've cunningly made a permanently open bleeder. How good am I at this mechanicking stuff? ![]()
