Hi All, Just a quick note to say hello as I have just joined.
I am new to biking. Bought a SV650S, Wreg, yr 2000 last may and past my test last July. Since January I have been commuting from Northampton - London's West End. One quick question (actually is seems a little long) for any suggestions. A couple of weeks ago I was changing the oil on my SV, (as I have done a couple of times before) but on this occasion was in a rush and some how ended up undoing the wrong bolt on the sump. After carefully putting it back the worst happened !! The engine case split (more of a hair line crack) but plenty of oil comes out when it's running. The bike is with a bike shop at the moment. A few things have been tried but it is now looking like the best option is to go for a replacement or rebuilt engine. JHS Racing in Bristol seem quite good and will have one available in a couple of weeks. I've also seen a Y reg, whole engine going for sale but am not sure if it is compatible with a w reg bike ? any suggestions/ ideas anyone. |

The two reg's you mention will have compatible motors.
If it's just a crack and leaks a bit, but the motor is otherwise OK and it's not a structural defect you could try some Chemical Metal or similar, or even Araldite at a push, just to seal the oil in.

I'd try chemical metal. I had a Mini once which threw part of a gear out of the diff casing, leaving a 3" hole. I emptied the sump (not that it wasn't already pretty empty), thoroughly cleaned the hole with a wire brush on a drill and applied plenty of heat to evaporate any remaining dregs of oil. I then filled the hole over with some aluminium mesh and applied plenty of chemical metal. I did another 1,000 miles without it leaking before I got rid of the car.
Try it, if it doesn't work you can then get another sump. If it does work, it's only cost you about £4 ![]() |
