I had a crack at some clutchless up gear changes last night but they seemed very jerky.
From 2nd to 3rd, rising up through the revs, and putting upwards pressure on the lever, gear change happens about 8-9000rpm, but the whole bike lurches. I am keeping the thottle constant. Is that wrong? Should I drop the throttle slightly to compensate, or do the change higher up the revs? It's a K4 if that makes any difference. Thanks in advance... |

Keeping the throttle open is your problem. You should rev up to whatever you feel comfortable with then roll of the throttle and snick up the lever. If you think about it it makes sense as to why your lurching when you keep the throttle open. When driving normally and you have the throttle open you accelerate hence if you have the throttle open when changing gear you will automatically be accelerating hence the lurch when you change gear. Rolling back will prevent this.

The throttle roll off doesn't need to be very large and can be done with only a tiny bit of backing off on the throttle - a couple of mm of travel, and light pressure on the gear lever. Sometimes I find it's easier to open the throttle slightly, then roll off as I change gear... but it's all down to personal preference and practice... do whatever works for you and your bike. Personally I find that I only do the clutchless thing if I feel like it, it's not something I want to bother doing all the time.

as the others have said, put pressure on the gear change lever and then roll off and on and it wil slot home nicely

it will change up easier if you wait for the little needle thingy to pass the redline.....
no, seriously , i find that the harder youre accelerating the easier it is to go clutchless. if your not reving hard whats the point?. |

Keep trying - I did, and after a short while I now find I do it without thinking. I don't usually do 1st to 2nd though, for some reason that escapes me...

Practice, practice and practice some more. It is hard to get right, but once you have mastered it, you will find it so much smoother. I do it 90% of the time now, even when just pootling along
