I am hopefully going to do a trackday at the start of august, but my bike is not set right at all.
First off i need a new rear tyre. I have Dunlop Sportmax front and rear at the moment. I dont ride in the wet and find this tyre very grippy in the dry, so i an thinking of sticking with the same tyre, any skitting around i put to suspension set up (and the fact the tyre is square). Is this the tyre that comes with a K3 from new? the front tyre has done 4500 miles and still looks in good condition so i was planning on leaving it on the bike. If i put a different make/model tyre on the rear how will this affect the bike? Second problem is, the suspension is set up cr@p for fast road riding so i think it will be dreadful on the track. The rear is on the hardest setting and the front is showing one ring. What do i need to do to the the set-up? I weigh 73 kg / 11 and half stone Cheers SPeeeeDY |

Hi speedy, I weigh about the same as you, had svk3 unfaired from new, rear was set as came from factory, front set at max in. Rode the edges off the standard tyres, no twitches or "iffy" occasions except as you say when the rear squared off......... rear lasted me just over 4500 miles and the front about 9000.
Changed over to a mix of bt020 rear and bt012 front..... wear rates ![]() ![]() ![]() Terry |

thanks for that.
Just another point is that i am not bothered if the bike only does 2000 miles to a tyre, as long as it sticks to the road. And my bike is a SK3, from what i remember the suspension set up is slightly different from the K3 Cheers SPeeeeDY |

if you aint bothered about tyre life stick some super corsa's on it near to slick as you can get + road legal mates swear by them and rennsport (same tyre)

I use BT010s and get jolly good grip, and they seem to last okay (6k rear, 10k front), even after some track abuse. personally I thought the stock tyres were rubbish but they were Metz's. I thought 020s were sports/touring tyres?
For suspension, stock will do for your first track day but the best mod you can do is stiffer fork springs. Set the preload right and this will make a big difference to if it's wrong. After that you're into more serious stuff with the associated time and cost, but it can be done. I rode my first track day on a nearly stock bike, the rear shock isn't too bad and the forks are crude but will do. Oh yeah, other top mod is dogbones to raise the back end an inch or so for less running wide on the exits. These are dirt cheap. Brakes should do, if they feel a bit dead then invest in braided lines and decent pads e.g. SBS (not EBC but that's my opinion). Then get your ass out of the seat and ride the rims off it. |
