Hey Jon,
I've had a k5 since Feb...13800km on it now....absolutely no problems at all. Only recommendations i can give at the mo is get yourself an engine bolt kit from chewy and fit it asap.....shafts on the lowest 2 bolts on the rhs had already started to corrode. Also a scottoiler when you can afford it is an excellent bit of kit-saves a lot of messing with the chain. I havent put a fender extender on it yet....but i do intend to, still i've ridden it in extremely crappy wet conditions and havent suffered any bad experiences with the front cylinder dying. The paint job could be better so if you get into the habit of not using a tank bag and polishing it regularly you should avoid most of the scratches... Apart from that a set of Frame protectors and off you go! |

Generally pretty bullet proof mechanically. Main things I would suggest are to make sure it is kept clean as bolts and stuff tend to age quickly otherwise. Brake calipers are not the best so I would say keep an eye on those to make sure the pad retaining pins do not seize into the caliper. Pistons tend to get a bit sticky with all the salt, road crap and brake dust so give them a spruce every couple of months and you will be fine.

nothing major. i clean my bikes every sunday wax polish etc so paint work is never a prob for me i always use good tyres and put a few teath of the rear sprokit to save on wear and tear.
might look at a fender exstender myself gettin a hugger aswell. |

Most manufacturers are pretty crap at putting any grease behind brake pads and on axles - take a look if you get the opportunity. Other than that, do as you're doing, wash it and wax/polish it and it should be fine. Most people seem to put tank protectors on the bit where your crotch/gut would go, I'd put some on the tank where your knees rub it aswell.

before you do anything else to your bike, my advice would be to spend some money on some decent tyres. It really does make a difference esp if your new to the bike as the original ones are rubbish. Z6's are great, but loads of others probably just as good.

Keep an eye on the gear lever bolt. A few people have had it fall off in the 2-4k mark

Keep an eye on the shifter lever shaft-bolt. It seems a few of us has had that thing to come completely out. Your left with a dangling shifter lever and linkage.
![]() I can't remember what ya"ll call them in blighty. But, over here there called frame sliders. If you don't already have them installed. I'd highly recommend them. Are they called bungs over there? Cheers! ![]() |
