Default Fitting the heated Grips tomorrow

Afternoon all,

I am putting the time aside to get the Hein Gericke heated grips fitted on Sunday on my K5, got all the tools and bits together but just wondered if anyone had any tips before I fit them?

Cheers

Rich

Own a rubber mallet... Don;t mount the control box on the bars, see if you can find somwehere between a frame spar to mount it to keep it accessible but out of sight- it's one ugly mother. I reckon the first company to make good looking grips will make a fortune And you really want to have it ignition switched.

I'm quite please with my method of relaying it off the plate light, since this means that when the lights are off, the grips are off- means I can turn off every bit of extra drain on the battery with a single button, ie when starting from cold after a day out in the snow. I'm not so pleased wit the fact that i actually put the relay into the tail light, not the plate light (the wires are the same colour...) so every time I put on th brakes they turn off

Thanks for that mate,

yeap I have a rubber mallet ready, I figured they might need a bit of help getting them on, I was going to just run them to the battery, but its a thought if some sod switches them on when I am not arround. Question is what cable to I use then?

Cheers

Don't ask me, I ballsed it up Just come in from th garage where I#m in the midst of rewiring them...

I hear K5s might have a spare live terminal on the fusebox, don't know if this is true though.

How I've done it... I've got a single ring terminal on each battery terminal, from which all the aftermarket stuff runs- horns, grips and Veypor, plus a charger/auxiliry hookup. These are then relayed, or not, as fit the role- ie the horns and grips are relayed, because IMO it'd be mad not to. The Veypor isn't because it doesn't need to be, it comes off the bike whenever it's parked anyway... And the external lead isn't because that would make it useless.

So for example, the horn's relay's simply placed where the old horn was. Quick and easy. The grips' relay is- or will be- attatched across the plate light. It's just a question of finding something that's on when you want it to be, and is accessible.

Cheers for that will try google to confirm the spare live terminal.

Thankfully I am taking the bike up to my fathers garage, so hopefully two heads will be better than two.

put the grips ina bucket of hot water 5 mins before you want to put them on.. they'll expand from "a bloody tight fit that needs to hit with a mallet" to a "tight fit that can pushed on by hand"

I wired mine to the live feed on the headlights. that way they're only when the ignition is on.. it was a white wire on the K1 and have had no problems with it so far... well except the first control box was knackered. but thats nothing to do with the wiring. this also keeps all the wiring at the front of the bike and no need to lift the tank etc to get the wiring to battery or fuse box

As for control box. I intend to turn mine on winter and turn them off in the spring. i've therefore put the control box behind the front fairing. I can turn it off by poking my arm down or taking the fairing off.
