Default bike running hot (in this weather?)

hi chaps.

for the last week or so bikes been playing up. eg tonight im riding along at about 60mph (quite cold night) . temp goes up to 94! dont think i've even seen that in summer. anyway, slow down for a junction, temp jumps from around 90 straight to 74. strange. gets home and leave the bike running from 80 it takes about three minutes to get near 100. while bike is running look at radiator and theres a veritical sritp of water or wetness in line whith the wheel which is steaming (which seems normal to me) turn bike off.
when the bike is running there is a smell of burning rubber (nothing to do with me) coming from the radiator. the rad looks fine apart from a bent fin here and there, no leaks, coolant fine. the bike is a k4 and not getting any real abuse lately

any ideas? gonna phone garage tomorrow but cant see them doing it till new year.

thanx .. paul

You flushed the system through?

Also, on my hornet, it would get incredibly hot far too quickly, replaced thermostat and everything was hunky dorey again.

Is your fan cutting in when it is supposed to - don't know what iotn should be for ann Sv, but somone will be along shortly. Don't forget that 100 degrees will not boil the water as its presurised>

Normal running temp can be between 80 and 95 even when its cold outside if your in town then it will still get warm. Fan cuts in around 102-104.

At a standstill the bike will get upto 100 fairly easily. Doesnt sound like its running too hot. The burning smell could be road muck buring off hot pipes and so on.

Airlock maybe ?

Regarding the fan, I had your problem and after lifting the tank to check that there was no damp on the connectors - I found that the plug and socket weren't even connected. They are located on top of the frame under the right side of the tank. The wires are so taught (hardly any slack) that they are prone to pulling apart)
After all that - the fan shouldn't need to cut in in this weather during normal riding - only maybe whilst riding in slow moving town traffic. I let my K1 idle now and again just to check the fan / cooling system works OK, and it takes at least 3 mins to cut in.

Don't really know if this is the case or not but I think is common problem in winter that you get funny smells off radiators due to damp weather and salt on roads, often get steam coming up also as rad gets to high enough temp to start drying off.
Used to get lots of people thinking radiator was leaking when really was just drying off the salt and damp.
(Have seen huge clouds of stream at times and always stinks)
