Default Chain lubrication..

Afternoon folks,

Being new to biking and slowly learing the in's and out's of maintenance and despite the fact that I cleaned and re-lubed the bike chain yesterday I noticed some rust still forming on the chain, I know it can't be helped, I ride the bike nearly everyday when working and at the weekend and tend to lube every 600 miles or so.

I store the bike outside that does not help. can anyone give us some tips in keeping the chain in good nick?

Cheers

Rich

If you are riding it regularly I cant recommend a Scottoiler enough... my chain hardly needed adjusting or any maintenance in 4000 miles!

Lubing it every 300 miles?? It all depends on the weather. Im a scotoiler fan, but that may not be for you. Just because the chain has a few bits of rust forming on the outer links, this does not mean that the cahin is not in good nick. As long as the rollers and l;inks are lubed, that should be fine. Give the face of the links a rub over with WD40 r similar.

Thanks folks,

I will give the chain a good going over with a clean, WD40, clean again and than re-lube, I will see how much the Scottoiler is, don't have a clue how to fit one, but I should figure it out!

Cheers

I think IIRC correctly the standard size scotoiler is £70 ish...

It wont totally stop the sideplates from going rusty though, but it definately will help keep your chain in top nick..

Maybe worth some chain wax or something on the side plates ?

Default chain

Rich,
Have a Scottoiler fitted: you'll be amazed.

I'm having exactly the same problem, and a friend who knows about bikes has recommended a Loobman

Much cheaper than a scottoiler, easier to fit as well

I have a scott oiler fitted myself. This will not however stop the side plates rusting if not used regulary.

My bike is at the moment forced into storage until the end of the month. The rollers themselves are just fine as they have had a nice coat of oil put on them by the scottoiler. I have however added a chain wax to both sides of the chain to prevent the rust.

I would suggest that through the winter you would be better oiling your chain far more than every 600 miles. I would personally be lubricating the chain every time I went out on it and again when I got it home.

I used to do this before I had the scottoiler and used to do it regardless of the weather.

As I've mentioned before, I'm trying out greasing the chain with Castrol's lithium grease as it's fling properties are much better than oil. I do it every 100 miles and it seems fine and I haven't had a spot of rust. Too much trouble for some peeps I realise but I'm happy to put up with the inconvenience.

How do you apply it?
