I always WD40, toothbrush and a rag.

I use petrol to clean the chain on my trials bike if its really ****ty, but I'm not sure if this method is "o" ring safe.

Didn't someone on here have a "moment" cos he used WD40 on his chain? think he said that it fooked the o rings up

Me on the other hand gave the missus a bowl of soapy water and some engine degreaser....came up lovely....lol

I think that there where other factors in his chain giving way not just the use of WD40.

I use a rag/Paint brush and Paraffin. I used WD up until then

Go for the lazy option:

Chain Cleaner & Lubricator (item at top of page)

Parafin and a toothbrush works well, get some surgical gloves or you'll spend more time cleaning your hands than doing the chain. Get some old cardboard to put on the floor too.

A chain oiler (scott oiler) will save you having to do the job as often.

Paraffin, Kero, tooth brush...

If its really bad, remove back wheel, submerge half chain in paraffin/kero over night, rotate and repeat. You'll be surprised what comes out.

He's right you know, last time I did that it was like digging around in the sofa. A couple of quids worth of change, half a biscuit, a couple of AA batteries...
