Default Trading a pointy for a curvy

Hi guys,

I have owned a pointy K4 SV for almost a year now, (for sale in the sale section wink wink!) and I decided I would like to get an S version or another type of bike.

A chap at work was advertising a mint condition SK1 which I went to see last night. I was absolutely amazed at the condition of it - he has had quite a few bikes as 'projects' to strip down, etc and he has owned this one since new. Its only done 2500 miles as he has a problem in his neck meaning it is painful to ride. So he just cleans and polishes it instead!

I took it for a test ride and was amazed at how much smoother it felt than the FI model, also was quite different being on an S version (haven't ridden a 'sports style' bike for ages).

I'm hoping to have the bike if I can sell mine, even though it is four years older than the one I'm selling.

This is more of a story than anything else but does anyone else think the curvy's are smoother than pointy's? Should I be wary of anything in a bike of this age? He hsa changed the fluids in it regularly I believe so it hasn't just been sitting.

Cheers for any views / opinions,
Matt

No the curvy isn't smoother than the pointy - in fact in riding there's so little difference as to not be worthy of mention.

The difference between your bike's condition and his bike's condition is however a separate issue.

Mine's an SK1. Nothing really to be cautious about from what you describe, sounds like the owner has it well sorted.

The only things to be aware of are the usual carb peculiarities, sticking chokes, carb icing in cold/damp. Find out how to drain the floatbowls, easy enough and worth doing now and then to keep water/crud out. Check the throttle position sensor, if he hasn't done it you can guarantee it's out of adjustment. Carb balance makes a world of difference but it sounds like it's pretty much spot on anyway.

Spray some WD40 or similar down the tank filler recess drain tube now and then to ward off rusting through into the tank (not too much, it will drip out of the drain tube and could reach the back tyre!). Usual thing about fender extender and/or silicone grease on the front plug cap to keep it firing on 2 in the wet.

Check out the known wiring chafing points, behind both seat bolts and under the pillion seat on the left side where the loom wraps rounds a frame bracket.

Front forks might clonk, and sort out the fork oil/springs to suit you.

Hummmm

When I rode the pointy and the curvy back to back I also thought the curvy felt smoother, looked better, went faster, nicer frame, more comfortable seat. . . . . . . . . .. . . . .

**Runs and hides from all pointy owners**

In all seriousness I did think the carb models ( curveys ) felt smoother than the FI

Possibly, but as people have mentioned, TPS adjustment, throttle body balancing and a remap for good measure will smooth it out nicely.

Sounds nice.

Would certainly give it a whirl

Only Carb Icing would give me a concern.

Unlikely on a day like today though.

I thought carb icing was only a problem with parallel imports, as the UK models had carb heaters on them.

I prefered the pointy K5 load bike. I rode over my curvey K1. Like the seating position more on the K5 SVS. I found it more comfortable and I liked being sat up higher due to what to me felt a taller seat height.

To me it also felt like it had a bit more getup and go than my curvey does and it also seemed to want rev more freely. I notice this when I rode e.d.'s K5 as well.

Mind you alot of this could be because the K5's I rode had small milleage on them and my curvey has 30k plus on it.

Mind you I rode Liz's bike the other day and it still felt better than my curvey did even though it has covered 14K now.

They do, but you still suffer from it.
