Well my pet hate at the moment is litter. Last night on the way to the pub I walked passed a bus stop/shelter with about 20 assorted bottles/cans etc dumped in the corner. all the grass verge in the area was in an appalling state and I dispaired at the state of my own village.
On the opposite side of the road were 3 scroats age about 17ish. One was riding his bicycle on the pavement drinking from a beer can accompanied by his friends. I could not believe it (Victor Meldrew Moment) when he simple threw his empty can onto the grass verge about 10 yards from a litter bin. Conversation. TW :- Oi! Pick up your litter. Scroats :- F*** off you stupid old git. TW :- You cheeky sod, would you do that outside your own house Scroat :- You have the cheek talking to me. I am glad I was on my way to the pub and therefore exercised my discretion and thirst. If this was on the way home. I guess I would now be in a hospital bed as a result of attempting to dispense beer fueled instant justice. Now do I grab a bin bag, walk down the road and clear up all this litter or join the rest of the sheep and simply ignore the problem.

I totally understand your reaction, but sometimes it's better to just ignore it and try and solve the problem in a less direct fashion.
A friend of mine ended up with a kitchen knife in his stomach, courtesy of a teenage ned, for tackling a very similar situation in a pretty unconfrontational manner. It just ain't worth it! |

This winds me up as well, and usually I don't say anything but mutter under my breath. However the other day.....
I was riding to work and filtering past some stationary traffic when this guy sticks his arm out of his car window holding an empty fag packet. He sees me coming and so just toys with it for a second. As soon as I'm passed he throws it into the road. I knew he was going to do this and the fact that he waited so I wouldn't see annoyed me even more. I stop, wheel backwards, pick up the fag packet and throw it back into his car. Now I wish I had hung around to argue with him, but the lights had turned green so I rode off with him shouting in the background. He was a gelled hair, suited city/estate agent type - arrogant f**k. Made my day and has now taught me not to shy away when I see this cr@p going on (unless of course I am outnumbered and would probably get my head kicked in!!) |

Yes Greg, I had realised at the time that I was slipping back into my alta ego.
It must be something to do with my advancing years, there was a time when kids had respect for themselves, others, and their environment. They talk it all the time without realising they also have to earn it. My own son is just a guilty as these scroats as I witnessed him throw a take away junk food box out of his window as he pulled up outside the house last night. He at least did as he was told and picked the bloody thing up.

Tim, i'm with you on this all the way mate.... but i also agree that its just not worth having a "chat" with some of these kids.
When i was their sort of age i'd ride my bike on the pavment and drink beer at the same time. But if somone came the other way i'd make sure I got off the oavment and shouted at my mates to make room for others to get thru. Any litter my mates dropped i'd challenge them about and if they didnt pick it up i would. then when i started driving it was the same attitude (no i didnt drive on the pavment, lol) . I would however tell them that the front seat footrest was the bin and anyone who sat their had to suffer it. All the rubbish from the 4 or 5 of us would stay in the car and if by chance mates didnt respect this opinion and blatently thrw litter from my car on a night out.... i'd turf them out. I nearly had a fist fight with one of my very close friends over it when he was drunk and threw a beer can out the window on puropse to see if i really would pull over and throw him out. I felt bad for his cousin who had only met me that evening and ended up getting out the car with my mate. he said "I can see your point mate but he's my cousin and i'd be wrong not to walk with him" its like those fruit shoot ads they aired for a time. It only takes one of the group with the right attitude to change the behaviour of their mates. Us "oldies" just wont get thru to them as they see us as just another person "having a go and getting at them cos theyre young"
