Hi all,
I have done a searches and think that i know what the prob it but there is a few things that i haven’t been able to clear up! I know full well about the old sv problem with the front spark plug playing up in the rain! I have not had the bike for long and the last couple of days have really been my first real experience of riding in the wet, and i think the plug is not firing properly, the first thing i noticed was when pulling up to work this morning she started to choke and splutter a bit but thort i let the revs prob a little low and put it down to that so didn't really think much of it at the time, then when i left at lunch it had real problems starting and kept cutting out and when i first pulled away had sod all power, so i asume the bike was only running on one cylinder. once i got going it was all of but every time i came to a stop she cut out again! and when i stopped and turnd off the bike there was a real bad smell of what i can only describe as burning rubber! (defo not clutch smell) then when left to come back again same problems. i assume that all of this must be because of the rain as she runs sweet as a nut in the dry but i dont understand the smell or all the cutting out, i always thort that if the front plug was playing up the rear cylinder would still fire and run ok, any help with what i can do now about this would be really appreciated, oh and by the way its on about 22k miles, and i don’t yet have a fender extender but i plan to get one as soon as i get paid!!! Cheers guys |

fender extender will fix that problem, in the meantime you could use use grease around the plug cap to keep water out.
The smell is normal - it is the water and muck getting burnt off the exhaust/engine |

Hi,
I had the problem this morning with the front plug not firing. To check, spit or put a small amount of water on the front downpipe, this way you can check if its getting hot. If its not it could be the front plug. I just took my HT lead off, dried everything and gave it a liberal spray of WD40, sweet as a nut now. I think all the above is good advice but im sure someone will be along if its not. |

cool cool, i asumed it was the plug but it was the smell that was really worrying me, but it makes sence that it is the rain/crud getting burnt off!
i think i will take out the plug and give it a clean when i get home and then give it a coating of grease around for a little extra protection untill i get the fender extender! |

One more thing to check. On the right hand side ( throttle side ) of the front cylinder is a small hole. This is the drain hole for the front plug. Any water that accumulates in and around the plug is supposed to drain away down this hole. Shove a pipe cleaner or the red tube off a tin of WD40 up this hole and make sure it hasnt got blocked my mud or dirt.
