That's because we have "free to air" TV and Radio programmes (loads of channels these days) provided by the BBC, our national state-funded broadcaster. Good it is, too.

OK, it's not "free" because of the licence but there's loads of channels and the BBC is widely considered to be at the top of the tree of world broadcasters. Of course, we have the commercial channels and Sky, etc, too.

Get this NO ADVERTS and no product-placement or endorsement allowed on the BBC.

Better still, the licence fee funds their making of programmes that wouldn't otherwise be made.

You sound amazed but I wouldn't want the US system over what we have. US telly sucks IMHO. Hundreds of channels of crap broken up up by interminable advert breaks.

I personally loath Sky. You pay through the nose, then get about 15 minutes of adverts per hour. Gits.

...and the amount of repeats is shocking...

Put another way - everyone with a TV is forced by law to part with money, rather than being pestered til giving up by public service broadcasters.

Dam right you do. Strangley enough its only really for the BBC, but even if you dont watch BBC television (what, people wanna watch ITV you tell me, for something OTHER than BSB?). I think its about £134 this year (it just goes up and up and up)

And if you dont have one, and you get caught, its £1000 fine. Some of my freinds (students!) have been slapped in the face with this!

Its 50% of the full license price. £5 per year if you live in residential care home. Free if youre over 75.

Says £131.50 for a full colour licence on the site atm.

But its free for me - I simply dont have a TV and tbh really dont want one or miss one.

Lyn I heard that they still chase people without a licence - assuming that everyone has one - do they still do that or have they left you alone?
