Default Slight stutters/Weird looking oil

Hi all,

I di an oil change at the weekend and have realised that the oil now looks like a c**p colour, kinda lightish brown (I know what oil looks like when it is new and it isnt that). Could it just be the new oil mixing with any oil left in the filter etc?

Also I havent really noticed it before but at low revs (2-3kish) the engine seems to surge (very very slightly) and is lumpy. As soon as I pick up the revs it seems to smooth out again. Do the carbs need balancing?

Andy

Yes, there will have been old oil left in the filter and housing if you didn't swop the filter with a new one. I take the filter off and drain it in the pan if I'm just changing oil.

Stutter might be anything, is your air filter clean?

Does it look like a cappacino? Sometimes a sign of a leaky head gasket Check your water levels as well.

I thought milky white residue in the sight glass was head gasket?

The oil that came out was fine, just black (no metalic look or milky residue etc) its just since the oil change and I noticed the change in colour before I even started the bike. Should have changed the oil filter I guess!

Any suggestions on the stutter would be good

Could be any, its the water mixing with the oil, then cooking, gives the residue in the 1st place. However, could just be moisture. When i used to use Duckhams in my XR2, it used to give head gasket symptoms, but castrl never...anyhoo, i digress.

For the sake of £6-8 its always best to change the filter. As for the stuttering, could be a few things. Carbs out of balance, dodgy plug, wiring fault, water, damp, water in the fuel, ignition stuff....the list can go on.

Do you mean the oil just looks dirty after changing it?

My oil would always go very dirty looking shortly after changing it - even with a filter change. Last change, I had a collection of 4 litre pots with a bit left in each, so I decide to drain, refill with all the bits left over (same brand and type) and run as a sort of flush, drain again and then fill up with oil. colour remained much clearer - even now 2-3 weeks on.
