I wanted to have a spare key on the bike, but it didn't seem likely I'd figure out a place to hide it that a thief wouldn't spot.
So I took the toolkit from its spot and put the following locking key safe in that space. ![]() So it takes a combination to get at the key. I guess someone could nick the box, take it home, smash it to bits with heavy machinery and then come back for the bike. But four guys and a pickup truck get the bike pretty easy anyway. Anyway, I thought I'd share the idea. Hiding a spare under duct tape has never been particularly satisfying for me... |

Just a thought but you might be invalidating your insurance by hiding a spare key on your bike!!! Good idear though but I prefer the AA.

I may be overlooking something here, but if you have lost your key, and need to retrieve your spare - how are you going to lift the seat?

You don't need to lift the seat - the tool box is located infront of the rear shock.

On my bike, a K6 naked, it is in front of the rear shock, behind a little door you can remove without tools.
I do not know if this has changed since the bike was introduced. But I'm quite sure I won't need a key to get at it. Good point on the spare key being on the bike. What's the AA you mentioned, upon which you'd prefer to rely? All I can think of is AAA, a big auto service club in America. Here, AA means Alcoholics Anonymous, which doesn't quite fit. Or maybe it does -- if you use AA, you won't be drinking, so you won't lose your key in the first place. So I'll take the point and look at my insurance policy and see what it says about a spare key being on the bike. Must say, though, it'd be a piece of work getting at that key! I use the same thing, screwed to the side of my house, to protect a house key; real estate agents around here use them to keep a key to get in and show occupied properties. Mostly I was sharing this to give others what I thought was a good idea, but I'll sure be checking to see if I'm buying trouble instead! |

it is on K4+
I found my toolkit was well rusty as the box lets in water, so be careful if you don't want to find a lump of rust where your key used to be - always assuming that the combination lock isn't rusted solid ![]() |

I keep the lockbox inside a ziplock freezer bag, and that's wrapped in a bit of t-shirt to keep it from rattling about.

So, the key is in a safe, in a plastic bag, inside an old t-shirt, inside the toolbox .
Even if a potential thief knew where to look I think they would get bored getting to the key! |
