Will it include bikes? Hmm, depends on whether they really want to reduce congestion, or just raise shedloads of revenue...

Ok.... so they would put a charge on the M25, wouldn't this cause congestion on the smaller roads around this route, which the M25 was meant to have helped to relieve congestion from in the first place??

Are they saying this for the whole M25, parts of it or just one lane???

They are also saying for a trial period... since when has any trial period just been a trial and been removed afterwards... i can't think of any tbh.

And what happens with road tax?? don't see them reducing or removing that by making people pay for road charges.

What happens to bikes and congestion charges... a lot of bikes filter and so do not really add to the congestion??

Congestion wouldn't be so bad if they stop digging up the roads so often... and maybe banning HGV's from using motorways in rush hour would clear up some of the slower moving traffic also... isn't that why a lot of lorries do the freight thing overnight??

I know i am deviating from the topic but still to do with congestion... Wasn't there also other plans like delaying work start times, and delaying the school start also to spread out congestion or think it or something like that?? unless i was hearing things.

I do around 30 miles each way everyday on the M25 section past Heathrow

Time to get an even smaller number plate

Very good point.

What alternatives are they going to give to using the M25?

Better and cheaper public transport - no.

Less need to use the M25 - no.

Discounts / free charges for those who use the M25 in a non congesting way (eg bikes or cars with more than 1 occupant) - no.

So, what is the point?

To raise lots of money and look green - yes.

It stinks.....

Ironic isnt it. I remember before i was even old enough to understand being at bypass-building protests with my parents, with them trying to explain to me that whenever we build more roads, we just get more cars to fill them. no-one much seemed to believe them then, pity really.

For my Geography GCSE we had to study bypasses and their effects on towns and villiages, meant spending a lot of time counting traffic around different areas of Medway, bypasses do work... but stuff like this will make everyone go back to the smaller roads again therefore making congestion worse!! And as Andy said, there is no other insentive to stop people using the Motorways or smaller cars... many ideas have been put forward about car sharing lanes etc, but they never really work as there is nothing really policing it AFAIK!!

The only workable way to look at congestion / pollution is this.

You need to reduce the need to even perform the journey in the first place, you must live near where you work, you must only travel on business if absolutely needed, you must holiday in your home country etc....

Most people will be up in arms about even the suggestion of the above, but unless we do something abuot pollution and congestion in the very near future it will be too late and we may as well give up.

All of this does not even consider the issues surrounding the USA and emerging economies......

The government needs to stop dicking around with half hearted attempts like this, and deal with the real problem at its root - the need to perform the journeys in the first place. Public transport does have its place, but if you dont need to travel then you dont even need to use public transport!
