Speed limit cuts
MPs' metric move to cut limits
Speed limits should be slashed to just over 40mph on motorways, say MPs

And they've devised a cost-effective way of cutting legal limits on all
roads in a stroke.

Nia Griffith, Labour MP for Llanelli in Carmarthenshire, wants UK speed
signs to be read as kilometres per hour instead of the familiar miles per
hour - and 70kph on M-ways equates to 43mph. This would cut the limits by
two-thirds without having to replace a single signpost.

The radical call came as MPs discussed climate change last week. "A national
speed limit of 50mph would make roads safer," said Griffith. "And I suggest
we interpret all signs in kph, so 30mph would be 30kph - around 20mph. And
40mph would mean 40kph, or 25mph. This wouldn't cost a lot.

Like we take notice of them anyway!!

However climate change is a serious thing and something needs to be done. Hell, its October the 20th and the Flymo Gardenvac is still hanging in the sed waiting to be used in anger...the trees are still green!!

Who is this muppet thats asking for this anyway, and hitting 40mph on the M25...i wish!

Well, I though we've been doing the opposite for ages! I mean, nobody around here does 50km/h in the 50 zones, it's more like 80 km/h...

How could they be seriously considering making all roads slower

I would have to consder leaving the country if speeds decreased. Its slow enough having to deal with traffic already.

I feel sorry for cage drivers that are forced to spend 2 hrs per day, 10hrs per week, 20 days per year, around 1000 days of their life time sitting in traffic.

Surely technology is at a level where we could INCREASE speeds so people can spend more time enojoying life than wasting it sitting on their ar*e on a road. Or work on speeding traffic and technolofy so we can get people to and from A to B quicker.

It wouldn't cost a lot? it would just double the time people spend driving , i bet most people make enough money in 1 hour to pay for 10 road signs!

And driving at 50km/h on a motorway is going to cause a more accidents by people that fall a sleep at the wheel , then accidents cause by speeding

will never happen, what about the loss to the economy as all haulage journeys will take longer, increasing either the hours worked or the number of journeys extra that will have to be made to compensate?

Aren't the majority of road speed signs, including on motorways, the NSL sign which wouldn't need to be replaced whatever they decide to do.
