Default 2007 SV650 Twin Spark Plug Heads

The 2007 SV650 is supposed to have a new head with two spark plugs per cylinder. Honda 1100cc Shadows currently have 2 plugs per cylinder, and I used to have a 1983 500cc Honda Shadow that had 2 plugs per cylinder. The literature on the 1983 Honda Shadow said:

"The quicker combustion caused by the twin plug ignition allows higher compression ratios to be run. The results are more complete combustion and greater fuel economy, more uniform power impulses and the capability of using gasoline grades as low as 86 octane."

From this information I would think the 2007 SV650 should get a little better fuel economy.

I would like to hear everyone’s thoughts here on what affects if any this may have on fuel economy and performance of the new SV650.

Also I have heard there is an issue with water entry shorting out the front spark plug on the 2006 and older models. Does anyone know if that problem was resolved with the new two plug cylinder head design.

Have at guys! Let’s hear your thoughts!

According to Suzuki's website, the compression ratio in both bikes (2006 and 2007) is the same, 11.5:1.

The only discussion of the new engine says "New twin spark plug cylinder heads for improved combustion and reduced emissions" so they're saying it achieves those results without higher compression. Stroke and bore are the same as '06 too.

Well thanks for clearing up one question I had about the Deauville that I have. It also has two spark plugs per cylinder head. I thought it was just a way of making the servicing more expensive () but now I have the knowledge.

I've heard (from pretty reliable people) that the UK one will still be single spark... The US Vstrom is dual spark, I know that much.

Just to be clear, I was in fact quoting from the US site. The whole SV 650 2007 line (including the new ABS bike, in both naked and S versions) is now using that new 2-sparks-per-cylinder engine.

It's weird if they're thinking about continuing to produce the engine in both varieties ongoing. Interesting.

I will be eagerly awaiting for some of the motorcycle magazines to do some fuel economy tests and dyno test on the 2007 SV650. I'm "guessing" that both may improve a little.

I don’t currently own one, but am considering purchasing one next spring. I have always rode cruisers, but have recently developed an interest in sport bikes and standards too.

One of the various tuners on Socal was quite convinced he could build a better race engine for the SV using the dual-spark head... Never heard any more about it though.
