Default More 3D Artwork.

Was just toying around in 3DS Max trying to get a half decent, photorealistic Earth. Do it just as a hobby at the moment but with some luck and a lot of hard work I aim to get some sort of related job in the next year or so. Hope you like. I also did an animation of the Earth spinning but I need to upload it to youtube or somewhere.

Hey, that's pretty good dude!

My old house-mate used to design 3D laser animations for big events (including the Athens Olympic games opening ceremony!). She tried to show me how to use 3D Max, but it was way over my head.

Thanks peeps. Think this one might go into my portfolio then, can never tell if a piece is good enough to put in with the stuff that I will show potential employers. I guess if they laugh and kick me out then it's wasn't that good!

Cool! I would add some atmospheric glow to the earth. Easiest to do it in 2D - just render out a second image of a blue sphere, slightly larger than the earth, with some falloff so that the edges are blue, but the centre is black. Then experiment with different combinations of blurring the sphere and screening it over your render in photoshop.

Thanks Luke...I was waiting for your reply!

I can actually do it in Max but for the life of me I can't remember how right. Something to do with Post Effects. Will have to play about this eve with it.

I may give that PS trick a go as well, I'm not great with PS although I am learning......slowly!

Don't do it as a post effect! One of the things people do when they are learning 3D is try and get everything into one render. However you are very constrained by what you can do with the result. You wouldn't believe the number of passes I'll spit out for a shot, but it is way more effective to control certain things in 2D than 3D. Things like depth of field, depth cue, glow, and matting are all much better handled in 2D than 3D. Even all CG movies like Toy Story et al. will render out elements and comp them together. Don't be afraid to do so as well.
