im currently running a gigabyte DS4 mobo, with 2gb 10th anniversary crucial ram, and a E6300

ive had it running at 3.2GHz stable for 5 hours (using the orthos blend test) but if i turn off the pc and reboot in the morning the orthos test fails inside 10 mins?? any suggestions its driving me nutts

A fan not starting on reboot, maybe? It's an odd one. I don't use blend myself, I don't trust it- I've had mine blend all day then fail on the single process tests. Are you seeing high temps when it fails, or just your usual? I've heard of Orthos failing when an intel chip throttles itself, but never had it happen.

PS, Crucial Anniversary, MMM.

Personally, I wouldn't bother overclocking. IMO little gain, lots of effort (as you're experiencing). I'd prefer to use the machine than spend hours tweaking it (much the same as the bike really).

However, if you're not seeing high temps when it dies a death, I reckon your PSU might not be up to the job of sucking juice out of it so early on. The capacitors etc discharge slowly over time (eg, over night) & a spike from a capacitor that's not charging properly can cause a machine to assume the national grid had a heart attack. There's dozens of other components in the PSU that would do the same.

When you originally overclocked the PSU would of been 'hot' still from the previous boot(s), and it's 'cooled' overnight.

Might not be the solution, but I've seen similar many a time.

on these new mobo the cpu fan doesn't start until it needs to, and under 100% load it only running at 51oC in TAT. im going to try re seating everything tonight, as ive heard that if the cpu cooler is on too tight it can cause problems.

what do you use for your benchmarking Northwind? prime95?

on a plus note when i got it running properly, i did the 3Dmark06 test and my E6300 got a higher score than my mates E6600

if only i could get it to run without a problem

51c at full load is really rather warm...

i run an A64duel core in a sff pc (shuttle) with a x1950 graphics card. i have my chip clocked to 3.8ghz on air and it bearly gets up to 40c (full load running 24x7). ambeint room temp is held at 21c

i would be really unhappy if my cpu got that hot

51oC at a full 100% orthos load isnt that hot, its pretty cool for a C2D most people see 55-60oC im running the Tuniq tower 120 cpu cooler, prob the best air cooler on the market, so temps arnt an issue

the PSU shouldn't be a problem its a brand new corsair 520W jobbie.

the reason i went with the core 2 duo (c2d) chip is it over clocks brilliantly i mean ive got a 1870MHz chip running at 3200MHz so there's a vast improvement in performance. im getting 204fps in CS:S where as at stock was getting about 130fps.

ive been given a few pointers on the overclockers forum, im going to try relaxing my ram timings and see how it goes.

im hoping with 5-5-5-15 timings i might be able to see a bit more :P

Nah, I just bench with 3Dmark, I'm not playing the numbers game, just want a quick rule of thumb. So don't try and impress me with your superpi speeds

Baph, I know where you're coming from but I spent about an hour total setting up my current overclock, plus running some stress tests overnight, to give me a 25% increase in FSB (it's a Pentium D so you can't mess with modifiers, just 14xFSB), clock speed from 2.8 to 3.5ghz and RAM from 400 effective to 500) You notice that sort of improvement in absolutely everything- frame rates, shutdown times, big number crunches... I could've spent £150 to replace the chip and got a slowdown, put it that way.

I've got a bit more time invested in setting up the cooling, but I do that anyway for noise control- mine's quieter at its high overclock now than it was as standard with just the case fans and a Freezer 7 cooler.

And with E6300s, it's an awful shame not to overclock them, it's just so easy usually. 'Specially with a Gigabyte board, because you can use the horrible Easytune software, not like the old days of hacking around in BIOS (though I do that once I've got a good setting). It's not really sensible to try and milk every last bit of power out, but you can easily get a real world boost.

'course, I'm incapable of leaving anything alone

Yep, 51's nothing for a Core 2, normal operating temp really. Wyntrblue, where do you ake your temps from? Marshall's TAT numbers are true core temps, they usually read about 15-20 higher than a surface pickup will...

Are you on OCUK, Marshall? Corsair, Tuniq Tower, Anniversary ram, DS4, E6300, it's like the Official OCUK spec

I wish i could understand what was going on in this thread; it sounds quite fun!

How do you overclock things and all that?

Matt
