my curvy has just hit 15k miles. it says in the handbook that the tappet clearances need checking - does it really need doing. thanks

No. Suzuki put it in the service schedule because they thought it might be a 'jolly good wheeze old chum'.
Decision on whether or not you want them checked rests with you, some bikes will need adjustment, others won't. If in doubt, check. |

Yes and no.
Popular wisdom is that the SV valves rarely need adjusting at that mileage,but one or two do.So best to check them anyway.You can do this yourself with a set of feeler guages,and it is not difficult.What becomes tricky is if you find they are out,and need re shimming.I would entrust any adjustments to someone who knows what they are doing.
