Default Filtering - joining the back of the queue

Pretty much as the title says

When you come to the back of a queue on a "fast" stretch of road how do you commence filtering.

I had one of those feelings today that made me think a car was going to chop across from the outside to the inside lane. i sat back and waited for the inevitable and -- wrong -- perfect behaviour from the cage.

However it got me thinking, there are a varity of ways to approach the issue of getting into filtering position safely. So how do YOU do it?

Being a wus I always wait for the cars etc to going sub 30 mph then commence filtering when the car in front and the car on the left are level with each other.

Personally I slow down, move into the left hand lane, judge what the traffic is doing (i.e. lookin for indicators etc) check mirrors, lifesaver and then start filtering. Had a few idiots pull across but you can't expect them all.

I always wait for the 'pack' to settle and compact, let the lane jumpers make their moves and then it's my turn. Cars usually give me lots of space.

I think each and every situation is unique and I don't have a hard an fast rule on this. Its just whatever feels right at the time, read the road, the conditions, the cars etc and make a judgment. I guess I generally slow quite a bit as I approach the tailback to do this.
