Default B&Bs take Euros?

Coming from Malta to tour England & Scotland next month. I was just wondering. Should I exchange some money to Sterling for paying B&Bs or would Euros suffice? I've got VISA but I don't think the nice people renting B&B rooms would take that?

Some odd places may take euros but you would be very lucky to find one I'd reckon. And its unlikely in the wilds. Tourist places may take them, but the rate may not be good. You will need sterling or use cards. All but a few places take cards these days, but as you say the quainter the less likely. Theres ATMs everywhere tho. Just carry enough cash for you next night or two. Even campsites take cards unless very rural. So enough sterling in case no one takes cards is how I do it when I'm roaming around. Mind you I dont get stung by card fees like you may.

Different places you get different people, Sterling is best to be on the safe side

In a way your asking in the worng place. Would be better to ask on a euro forum if anyone has any success here with euros as most here wont have any clue at all, as we dont use them.

Yep, you want good old fashioned National Currency, none of that Euro stuff.

Please note that some Scottish banks issue their own banknotes. These ARE useable in England, although some people will try and refuse to take them. You WONT have that problem in Scotland with English banknotes however.

Try and get your Sterling in £20 notes and smaller, due to forgeries, many places will not accept £50 notes and bigger. Also in Scotland, check any notes you receive in change etc, however this should probably be done everywhere anyway.

Hope to meet up with you when you are over here

Also note in Scotland often you can still get £5 notes out of ATMS. In addition, the there is usually and additional step, where the machine instead of just asking you to confrim the transaction asks you 'Are you REALLY sure you want this money?'.

Both must surely be related to the firm fiscal policies favoured by many Scotsmen

Thanks guys, I guess a ride to the local bank is in order than. Better be on the safe side. The small notes tip is great Dave, makes sense so will get the bank to give me 20's. I'm guessing I'll be needing the cash for B&Bs only as for food I'll be going to pubs, shops and maybe a restaurant which I'm sure will be equiped with a card reader.

Its just that we like pressing the buttons on the machine

Once upon a time (15 years ago) I used to work in a bank.

There was one guy who, every day would come in and deposit £100 into his account.

One day while someone was being trained, they just happened to be using this guys account to be shown how to retrieve address info, statements, that kind of thing.

It was noticed that this guy would take £100+ out of his account every day, but in an unsual manner - there would be 10 or so transactions of £10.

One day the manager had a word with him.

Turns out he was fascinated by the machine and would take money out, then put it back in again, just so he could take it out again.

He stopped doing it one day, guess he got bored.

You will have the same issue with smaller pubs as B&Bs, they will not always accept cards. So you may need some cash for those also.

I know it's risky, but try getting all the cash you will need in one go to minimise commission charges.

Also bear in mind that some of our more rural petrol stations may have a minimum purchase before they accept a card. (As I have found out on one ride out) and topping up a bike may not reach this minimum limit.

Stupid I know, but that is country folk for you
