Default What is this bit in the airbox

What is the wire woolly material that is lodged in the pocket at the top of this pic of my air box. More importantly what does it do??

I believe that is the crankcase breather.

It's usually there partly as an oil mist separator and partly flame arrestor, as said, for the crankcase breather.
