The bike lives in a prefab garage. The roof has a crack in it (wide enough to see through and a couple of feet long). It was bodged quite successfully by the previous owner by fixing some plastic sheet under it. Unfortunately I've dislodged that and now the rain get is. I can't re-do their fix I've tried. So I'm looking for ideas about how I could seal this.
TIA Oh and don't go worrying about the Asbestos bit - I'm not worried about it and I don't think it's even an issue. I mention it in case anyone knows the stuf I'm on about and how you might fix it. |

It'll cost a fortune to replace I know that. Hazardous waste removal and all that. Apart from that I don't know if there's a product you can use to patch the asbestos.

Actually there are tips where you can take this stuff for free. That doesn't worry me. However buying something else to put up would cost me a chunk of cash so I'd rather try and fix what I have. The asbestos is not the problem, the crack is.

If you can't afford a bit of sheet to go over or under it I don't know what to say. You can get super cheap mastic tubes from hyper value, could fill up the crack with that maybe.

I'm quite happy to buy a bit of sheet to fix it but the roof is corrugated so finding something with the same profile is likely to be difficult. Also how do I fix the two sheets together - no more nails? I doubt it'd form a waterproof seal. Whereas mastic would seal it, but would it fix it? |

My dad's old garage had a roof like that, and we removed a couple of sheets which were damaged and replaced them with clear wriggly plastic panels - the profile doesn't have to match exactly as the plastic can be fairly flexible if you do the job on a warm day.
Make sure the plastic sheets are fitted with plenty of overlap and you'll do fine. |

i had the same probem as you with my garage roof and i bodged it for years with silicone and the like's but it was a friend of mine who give me the idea of covering the whole roof with a fish pond liner! so i purchased a firestone rubber liner (the stuff they make man made lakes with) which has a lifetime warranty against UV rays and punctures and just draped it over the top fixing it around the edges with roofing lath. my mate got the idea his self and used it on his shed roof over 15 years ago! and its still dry as a bone! the firestone stuff i got was £100 for a 20x10 piece so its not cheap but you can buy cheaper pond liners.

I think the plastic would look a bit funny. I could live with that but come time to sell (inevitable as this is my first house) I wonder how peole would see it. I think I'm more inclined to follow up kwak's idea.

Depends on how you look at it - we did it deliberately to let more natural light in over the milling machine and bench, without aesthetics in mind. It's another possibility, in any case.

Hmm - I do like the light aspect of it. I could perhaps change another panel that doesn't need it to make it look deliberate - and get more light in!
I must admit that one thing that has been putting me of washing\cleaning\working on the bike is that I'd have to do it in a dingy garage (when I lived with my parents I could use the driveway). |
