Default Claim for Damaged Helmet / Leathers on Home Insurance?

After my off I need to replace my helmet and boots. Since I did not plan on crashing I did not take out the optional helmet and leathers cover.

Has anyone tried claiming for these items on thier home contencts cover? What happened?

Any other ideas on how to recover the costs for these items from insurance?

MBNA VISA purchase protection does not cover 'motor accessories' and a helmet damaged while in use is a motor accessory.

Didn't you drop it as you were walking to your garage?

OK perhaps badly worded by me. The purchase protection does not cover motor accessories. Unless the helmet was being used as something besides a helmet (like Grinch's flower pots) it is not covered.

So it looks like home contents. Any comments, anyone?

Give them a call re dropping it on your way to the garage. Would they need to see it? Would they know the true story of events?

Haven't tried it on myself, so I don't know. Depends on your home contents policy really.

BTW, the bike, insurance job or not?

My other half successfully claimed for his full bike kit on our home contents policy, and it didn't affect the premium either. However it depends on your policy as to whether it's covered under standard terms or as an 'extra'.

Off the top of my head I'm not 100% sure what aspect my kit's covered under, but I think it was part of the main policy but with an extension re value of cover.

Ok its not bike gear, but I had £1700 worth of golf gear nicked out the back of the wifes company car, the company didnt cover personal items so we went through the household insurance and got a max of £1000 back. If you go down that route tell them as you went down in the drive you were carrying an open can of white gloss which somehow landed on the carpet and telly, and let me know how you got on

We upgraded our home contents insurance a few years back and when I had a minor off last year they paid out for new leathers, lid and jacket (which I was wearing over the top) - I think it came to about £1200 in all. They sent down an assessor (who turned out to be a carpet cleaner they use) and confirmed the goods were damaged. Vey quick too

Thanks all, will try to get new lid and boots from home contents insurance.

FYI the bike has gone to a repairer and there was much sucking of teeth and tutting.

We had our lids thrown about and badly scratched during a break-in.

Claimed on the contents.

Claim was declined because they classed them as 'vehicle accessories'

I asked them where on the vehicle they fitted?

Suddenly they became 'personal possessions' as they are personal to your head.
Not an accessory that fits on a bike.

Got the cash in the end, but had to fight our corner

On our policy sporting goods are covered and so were all other personal possessions but not initially the lids. go figure

I think you'll struggle 'cos of the way they were damaged- in a crash, worth a go though.
