Default Driving license replacement - quick question

I'm just applying for my driving licence to be replaced since I have recently moved house.

My current licence is a paper one issued in the 80`s, so I have to send it in, and attach a photo on the application. So far so good.

The next bit is ambiguous - regarding confirming identity. It says (in part A) that I can consent to them checking my ID with the passport office if I have a new style passport; no need to send it in. I have, and have consented.

Part B then lists what docs I need to send in, like birth cert etc.

My ambiguity is this - its unclear whether the electronic passport check is sufficient, or do I have to *ALSO* supply some other proof of ID.

I can read it both ways, the form or accompanying guide never states that the electronic passport is sufficient; however it can also be interpreted that you do EITHER part A or part B to proove your identity.

Anyone recently applied for a replacement licence and / or can guide me?

Update:

I went to the direct gov webpage to try and get some info - I've managed to apply for a new driving licence online - without sending in any documents at all!
It says it will use my passport photo on my new license and it will arrive in 10 days

If this really works I'm impressed.

A little different but.......

I have just upgraded from a paper to a photo license without a change of address. My paper license has started to self distruct after 8 years in my wallet.

So I got a form to fill out attached photo and agreed to passport use. Then I put a cheque for £10 (from the website) in the envelope with the form and sent it off. Less than a week later I had my new license. Very efficient service IMO.

But do you still have your M/C entitlement? Been a few stories doing the rounds about people getting new licenses and finding it gone, DVLA claiming no knowledge of them ever having done M/C test

Heard those stories too - when I first heard them I phoned DVLA and asked them when I had passed my cat A because its not mentioned on the licence (cat B is), and I need the info for insurance quotes.
They told me, so I figure they must have it on computer records.
Also, I still have my old paper licence, although the web application stipulates I must return it, I'll hang on to it just until the new one arrives.

(I cant really be parted from it, airfield driving needs it carried at all times, as well as the 30 million insurance indemnity )
