Please take some time and read and maybe sign this http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/danger-animals/
there are so many good owners out there its about time people took responsibility for their actions. I know its another dog thread but i found this on a dog forum i am on and after the reactions of people yesterday to Kitkats thread i thought this would be of some peoples interests. What do people think of this idea? Sammy |

Before I say anything about the petition, I have something to say....
As a dog owner I totally agree that owners of dogs that attack other humans should be held responsable, with the full weight of the law put against them! However the definition of manslaughter would have to be changed: The unlawful killing of another without intent to kill; either voluntary (upon a sudden impulse); or involuntary (during the commission of an unlawful act not ordinarily expected to result in great bodily harm). This means ( with some serious regret ) that the petition is useless. Just having a dog that is potentially dangerous does not constitute a possible manslaughter charge if the dog does kills someone. Change the manslaughter law and we will be able to send the Ar*eholes that have dangerous dogs to jail for a long time!! I hope not to offend anyone, but I do agree that something needs to be done. |

I'd really love an education programme for dog owners along the lines of if you dog saunters up to mine when my dog is on a lead and your is not, it's not my problem when yours gets bitten. Dogs know only two things in this situation, fight or flight and as mine is on a lead, he cannot run away.
And keep dogs on leads when near roads! |

Educate, don't legislate! Make responsible owners, not make owners responsible! Legislation doesn't work - if it did then most of the problems with this country would be sorted by now! Speeding is an offence - we all do it, graffiti is illegal yet it still appears. What the hell is a new law going to do?

Agreed education is the key! responsible owners take the time to take their dogs to training classes, i am even training to be a dog trainer and will even do pre puppy classes to educate about what a responsible owner will need and should expect before the get the puppy home.
It will be very hard to enforce the law and it doesn't leave any room for the very well trained dogs that acidently bite a child in playing with it. Simple things like trapping a tail in a door can make a dog snap... luckily with bite inhibition (getting the dog to soft mouth rather than full bite), we taught lupo that biting is ok but if he hurts us then its game over and we gradiually weened him off biting so now when he does bite its not puncturing or dangerous (he only bites in play fighting lol but as soon as he starts getting rough we walk away). I think that if you make it fair for responsible owners looking at all aspects of the case if a dog attacks instead of just the attack.. was the dog provoked etc.. put it this way Lupo wouldn't hurt a fly but if someone started on him or a dog started on him he would finish it as he is so big!.. but my dog would be the one to blame in an unfair court as he is so big and therefore must be dangerous. It's more aimed at those that do not take responsibility like letting them loose off the lead and encouraging them to attack other dogs. If any of these try and attack my dog i know he'll be able to handle himself while i deck out the owner!! Luckilly there aren't any of those people or we haven't noticed anyone like that around here. |
