Default Handle bars advice

I have and SV650s with the standard bars. Sometimes I have back ache and I put this down to me being over the tank too much.

I figured bar raisers would help but I can't see how much they would raise the bars by, has anyone got them and if so how much do they raise?

I've seen a SV650s with bandit bars on, has anyone made this mod to their SV650s or would you not do? It looks not as sporty but it would be more practible for me and my back.

Any ideas gratefully received.

How long have you had the nike Shelly? I found that for the first few weeks I was the same, then I moved the balls of my feet to the pegs, gripped the tank with my knees and relaxed my grip on the bars - also more riding meant that I kinda got used to it, and now, no more aches and pains...!

Hummmm http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=89840

Anyhoo, I see part of the problem is the 'reach'. I assume pointy and curvy have the same setup, so if you remove the bolt under each clipon that holds it in position (bolts into underside of top yoke), then slacken the clipon itself, you should then be able to twist the bars back a bit (don't move too far else they will hit the tank on full lock ). This alone might help you out.

If not then the bar raiser thingys that Grinch posted seem a logical (if not expensive ) solution ... but if you are in real discomfort then it is worth the cash

Just thought that another thing I did which helped was to move the angle of the brake and clutch levers downward a bit, so you don't arch your fingers up to reach them...seemed to help with me..

I put FJ1200 bars on my SVS (with a little modification to the bars) and the riding position is vastly improved IMO, better control all round.

I needed a longer brake line (about 30mm, local place made it up for me in stainless fittings, £20), everything else adapts easily.

Do it (one of the options anyway), you won't regret it.

I've wondered whether some of the VFR bars would do, many are 41mm forks, trouble is there are a lot of variants to check out.

Is it safe to have the standard clip ons moved from their original position? I wonder as they have a locating pin that fits inside the top yoke at one point only.

This means that they will be lower if they are out of position unless you grind that pin off. Anyone done this?

There's a bolt through a hole in a tab on the curvy type clip-on which secures it in position into the underside of the top yoke.

Older designs didn't use this type of locating arrangement. I believe much of it is down to assembly methods, so you can't get the angle wrong, but there's also the issue of trapping bits of you between bars and tank if you fall off (not sure just how effective that would be considering the relatively lightweight nature of the tabs on aluminium bars). If you dig deep there may be some sort of regulation about it (for the manufacturers) rather like ball ends on levers, don't know.

The FJ bars I fitted are steel, but have only one pinch bolt onto the stanchion and I'm not sure how secure that would be on its own. I welded a new tab on to line up with the SV yoke bolt-hole.

My thinking was if the pinch bolt is enough to stop the clip on moving down the stanchion then it must be enough to stop it rotating around it too.

It must be like you say, an assembly aid.

Thanks guys for all your suggestions. My simple problem is my arms ar too short and outreached with no bend in the elbows so its a Shell error not an SV error.

I either adapt the bikes bar somehow or get rid for something easier to ride - decided due to a near head on on the way to Stormy Petrol in a country lane, left me a little shook up and I fell out with Zuky.

Ta folks

Hi, I replaced my upper tripple tree calmp for My 06 SVS with a factory tripple tree from a Standard 06 SV. it raised the bars up over 5 inches and pulled the bars back towards the driver by 3 inches. I used superbike handle bars which are similar to the factory standard SV bars. I put a thread on here how to change out the bars and tripple tree. there are one or two companies that make after market kits to replace the clip on bars. I have even seen people re-mount the clip on handel bars above the tripple tree.. email me if you have any questions or look up the chandle bar change out tread. I hope this helped?
