Default Being knicked at 172mph!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/o...re/7009923.stm

A car that is more than capable of that speed, on probably an empty road. Stupid, yes, but really is it Unreasonable or fair for 10 days and a 3 year driving ban?

Some interesting quotes in the story.

I have always questioned why he didnt just keep going, the police were out of their car with another motorist, theres no way they would have got his plate at that speed or indeed have kept up with him after getting to their car and getting upto a decent speed.

Keep going and find a multistory/underground car park as soon as possible. (only joking of course )

Think you meant 10 WEEKS mate, not 10 days.

Well, hard to comment as we dont know the circumstances, but i do know the road and have done 3 figure speeds down there many a time, its streight and the visibility is very good.

If he had caused a crash we would be up in arms about that, but he didn't tricky one this. I'd like to think that if i got nicked at 100+ then they would use common sense and not do me, but i doubt it. i agree the car is more than capable and probably handles better at that speed than some of the sheds on the road do at 60mph. still, 172 is a wee bit excessive. still think a prison sentence is rediculous though, i hope he appeals aganst it, particularly as a doctor got off with death by dangerous without a prison sentence recently! is speeding worse that killing a biker - apparently so!

tit. 172 is more than excessive - the stopping distance is about 127 miles at that speed. Also bear in mind it was not his car, his boss had already told him the day before that he must not take the car...The guy is seriousy slow of thinking (hence the stopping distance - 16.99 miles of that is for him to make his mind up!)

How he got 10 weeks, when another driver got 5 months for 150 I do not understand. Working on that logic it should be 20 years inside for 40 in a 30 limit!!

If he'd been a cop he could have used to old "fmailiarising myself with the vehicle" ploy and got away with it, no doubt.

A lad I know was jailed for 5 years for apparently causing death by dangerous driving. Bike overshot a corner into oncoming traffic, no contact with the car involved.

There a real story behind it and to this day many believe (including me) it wasnt him or his porsche but hey ho, thats another story.

He was let off aggrevated vehicle taking

Juast noticed the fact - each time he blinked the car travelled 23 metres whilst his eyes were shut!

Don't know about you, but I tend not to blink when I'm going over 100mph (on a private race track, officer). Also, 23m is b-all in terms of scale at that speed. It's not like you'd be able to react to something 23 meters away from you before you hit it anyway. Just an interesting factoid some hack has worked out to spice the story up a bit.

Not that I'm condoning what the chap did. The moment he took it without permission he lost any sympathy I might of had. That said, there are people who consider me a lunatic if I admit to doing over 100mph, but I have never done it when it has been dangerous to do so. Likewise, I know people who have regularly been doing 160+ for years and never been caught or had an accident, so I'm not about to claim that it's "never safe" to do those sort of speeds on the public road. I can think of at least 2 stretches of road where you could get to those sort of speeds and still be able to stop in the distance you could see to be clear and that there is nowhere for traffic to emerge from.
