Default Reg plates.....

.....has anyones ever just..............fallen off?

Got in to work this morning and mine is missing!?

It couldn't have just fallen off - could it? I didn't notice if it was there when I took the cover of it this morning cause it was pitch black. Got my mrs to check and it's not lying in the back yard either. Surely if it fell off in motion somebody behind me would have flashed or something?

If someone nicked it - why?

Would someone bother to nick it?

I noticed that the plastic nuts holding the reg plate onto my k7 had both split only 2 months into the bikes life. The plate was dangling and I am convinced that it would've come off on my next ride. The only reason I spotted it was because I was cleaning the oil off the plate, otherwise it would've flown off as soon as I hit the M4.

Plates can just "come off". Mine started coming off on a TVSF rideout to Boxhill. One bolt had come undone and gone awol. Once one goes it's just a matter of time before the other lets go I would guess.

This was a plate I had put on myself with metal nuts/bolts. I can't believe it would have just fallen off cause I would have noticed it putting the chain on every night - especially if as I suspect one nut would go first and it would at least be loose if not hanging there.

Anyway to be on the safe side I have contacted the local police to tell them I reckon it's been nicked just in case someone has and uses it for something naughty.

I would be suspicious of 2 bolts coming off at the same time at the same rate to allow the plate just to come off. I would inform the police that your plate could have been stolen, giving them the time and place you first knew and keep a record of your contact with them. In my area of West London so many plates are being stolen that the local police are issuing special tamper proof kits for cars and bikes.

Great excuse if you get caught on a speed camera

I had thought of that but I'm more worried about someone nicking petrol or worse and the police coming to my house after being passed the reg number.

It may have fallen off - I can't be 100% sure of that but on the other hand I'd rather be safe.

ive had 3 plates just vanish, 1 on my old el252 and 2 on a triumph boneville, the first 2 i lost were done up useing the crappy yellow plastic bolts your supposed to use, whilst the last one was fixed on with metal screws with those bolts with plastic in them so that when you attach them they are supposed to not come undone. They were taken from a skateboard truck if you know the part i mean. I never bothered to report them to the police but thinking about it it might not be a bad idea and its better to be safe than sorry.

As others have said, report it to the police. It will only serve to strengthen your position should any speeding fines come through for a cloned bike using your plates.

Well I reported it. For once I actually didn't feel like I was wasting their time. They looked genuinely interested. Told me cause the reg number will be circulated that I may get stopped a couple of times but gave me a crime number to quote.

They agreed better safe than sorry.

Just a case of sitting back now and watching out in case something happens.
