Wonder how i managed that..
Anyway. Problem was.. Got to my bike after college today, was quite cold maybe 8C. WEnt to start it without the choke, didnt want to. Put the choke on, still didnt want to and after about 60 seconds, it was dead, battery gone. So i waited around for my dad for an hour, then tried bumping it several times, heavy work! in first and second, no joy. So we hooked it up to teh car, pressed it once, BAM fired up! BUT! stuck idling at 3,000RPM with NO CHOKE. So i thought, alright ill ride it back then maybe itl sort itself out. Got home after 15 minutes, no joy, restarted still idling there. So my questions are: 1. WHy did it kill the battery so quick! (it was new 2 weeks ago). 2. Why has the RPM done this! the bike is a 2000 SV650S, 14,000 miles. Any ideas? |

Why did you replace the battery?
I assume the old one went flat,but did you find out why?You need to check out your charging system,as it gets very expensive if the reg is duff and is frying the battery. As for the 3000rpm tickover,try checking the choke plungers on the carbs.They tend to stick and this could cause the problem.If not there could be an air leak into the inlet manifold,maybe where the carbs are not seating properly.

I think ive sussed it...
I waited for a couple of hours and it seemed to die down, but they arnt completely unstuck I can tell. So i wacked full choke back on then off and it shot back up to around the 3,000 mark. Should i just take of the carbs off this weekend and lubricate the mechanism? |

The choke plungers on the SV stick in the carb bodies. There is a Y-piece splitter which takes the one cable and feeds it to both carbs. This tends to get water in it which leaks down into the front carb. Remove the cables, clean it all up and lubricate with oil. Pack the choke splitter full of grease.
As for the battery, check the charging circuit as documented about a every 4 days (search for "dead battery" or "Charging circuit" etc) to see if the reg/rec's ok.
