Apparentley he wants to do the Dakar in 2009.
...and the long way up is being talked about. The Americas.
I've just done a domain search for longwayup.com thinking I could make some money(!!) and some cheeky, cyber squatting scroate has beaten me to it.
they have been talking about the long way up for a while so obviously someone was bound to have beaten you too it ;)
ohh great more bitching and moaning from those 2 , i think ill give that a miss, are they then going to milk it and do the long way diagonally. If its anything like the long way down it will be toss.
you know i only half agree with you.. if i had an opportunity to do something so fantastic and the only way to be able to do it was to have a film crew and everyone else sort it out for me and have a fantastic team behind me then i wouldnt say no ;)

didn he break both his hands and ride 400km for help ??
There are loads of guys and girls who've got on their motorbikes and trekked off around the world, usually with little or no money. You could start by reading up on Dan Walsh before you move to a real hero, Ted Simon.
Boorman and MacGregor have a shed load of dosh (just get the pictures of their workshop!!), an army of back-up including BMW, but still expect us all pat them on the back.
Get real! Just publicity fags!

Yep, he had a bloody good stab for a first timer, but got injuried out. But with style... Can't say I'm a fan but I really expected the dakar attempt to be a joke, it turned out very different IMO.

I hear lots of sour grapes.
I'd love to do what they've done.
First one was great, second one was pap as Mrs McGregor spoilt it some what for me...
Hopefully the third will make up for it.

You know it was canceled this year?
Organisers cited warnings from the French government after the slaying of a family of French tourists in Mauritania — where eight of the competition’s 15 stages were to be held — and “threats launched directly against the race ”."
Future of Dakar Rally now in doubt for 2009

I agree. The whole idea of two mates riding together was very appealing. The arrival of his missus just spoiled the illusion of a grand adventure and turned it into a kind of family show....In a different context it would have been fine but it changed the dynamics and I lost interest after that.
Respect to the boys however and did enjoy the long way down.

I think the america's should be better for the simple fact they should have good/resonable (or just have them) roads. All of it is good PR for bikes, the amount of none bikers watching it was very impresive! :D
Shame about Dakar 2008... Safety first though deffo!

I've not seen the series properly but the book was very good, started out just repetitive and predictable but by the end the passion, hope and disappointment really gets it going, as though he was learning to write as he went ;) It's not an event I've really been a big fan of, but the book was good enough to really convince me otherwise, to the extent I really want to see the rally in action (I do NOT want to ride it!)

Well glad you have learnt to love it. Again a shame that its canceled this year. You can however keep an eye out for rally raid, its kinda the short(er) version of the dakar, kinda like a rally series... well it is really.
Ive watched it for a few years now and man its impresive what they do, the bikers and quaders especially, they are nails! Trucks are just mental 8' of suspension travel 1200BHP :smt104 and the cars are just cool to watch.
The 2008 Dakar Rally (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Dakar_Rally) was cancelled due to security concerns after the al-Qaeda based murder of four French tourists on Christmas eve in December 2007 in Mauritania (a province in which the rally spends eight days), accusations against the rally calling it "neo-colonialist," and accusations against Mauritania calling it a supporter of "crusaders, apostates and infidels", the France-based Amaury Sport Organisation, in charge of the 6,000 km rally, said in a statement they had been advised by the French government to cancel the race which was due to begin on Saturday, 5 January, from Lisbon. They said direct threats had also been made against the event by al-Qaeda related organizations.
Damn they spoil everything! Grrr
