Hello all .
This is my first post, I'm new to the suzuki sv650 and found this site very helpful.
got a problem starting the bike.
it's a 2000 w plate sv650 sy k2, and brought it hoping to get it back on the road as my first big bike.
it's been sat for about 8 months now, I've serviced and done all the usual checks and today ready to fire it up, and nothing:(
Ingnition power is there, and all looks ok, but not starting.
if anyone can guide me what to look for to be the most common thing or things to check that would be great.
thought I'd ask, before it goes down the bike shop, and starts costing me a load of cash.
anything will be a start. :D

Do you pull the clutch lever in as you try and start it?
Can you be more descriptive in your diagnoses :?:
When you say nothing, do you mean when pushing the starter button nothing happens at all, you get a whirring and a click, it tries to start but wont fire :?:
Is the start switch on :?: Are you pulling the clutch in when starting :?: Is the clutch switch on :?:

Yeah just nothing.
pulling in the clutch, pressing the start button, and no noise, nothing.

what do you mean about the clutch switch on ? and start switch on?
Get the battery out and get it on a charger such as an optimate. When it's charged up, put it back in and try again, if this doesn't get it check all the fuses, including the one on the starter motor relay (follow the +ve lead from the battery, and it's the first box you come to)

The clutch must be pulled in, the red "kill switch" on the right handle bar most be in the "run" position. The sidestand should be down and the bike in neutral to start the bike.

Check that the kill switch hasn't accidentally been switched on (big red button on right hand switch gear) and check underneath the clutch lever, there is a wire that connects under there which often drops out (senses that the clutch is engaged and that the engine can be started).

As above, and Is the sidestand up? Is the bike in neutral?
Dangerous Dave's one is important too- I've fallen foul of that- very easy to knock loose without intentionally removing it.

turning over now, thanks guys, just need to make is run now.
It was the connector to the clutch leaver, it's been bridged, dirty wire.
Wish it would run.

If its been stood for 8 months, you might want to drain the fuel out, check the carbs for any gunge and if its there clean those out to, and then refill with fresh fuel.
Unleaded can go off over time and that might be why it wont fire.

ive only recently joined the sv lot, but my 01 sv was sitting for only about 2 weeks when i brought it, it ran but seemed a little spluttery once got that tank out and then with some fresh fuel and a charged batt its now perfect. :D.

The bike is now turning over, but not starting.
This could be that it has been sat for 8 months and not started since.
Everything works on the bike ok, Iv'e taken a plug out to check for a spark, and thats ok.
There is fuel in the tank;) but not sure where to go now.

yeah I think your right. fresh fuel tomorrow then.
Would a spray of carb cleaner be ok, for now.
I'll get back to you all tomorrow :)

Carb cleaner might help, but when unleaded goes off, it leaves a residue or gunk in the carbs and I believe from what I've read that it takes some shifting.
I'd just drain the tank first and then start again with fresh fuel and see if that gets it going. Doing just that did the trick with my other halfs SV that had been stood for a similar length of time.

Noooo I'm not really that knowledgeable, best keep this thread updated rather than you relying on my dodgy knowledge :D
If the petrol has been sitting in the float chambers for 8 months, you are going to need to be cleaning them carbs out. I'd dump the old fuel, clean out the carbs, fuel filter and fuel lines before chucking fresh fuel in and running the engine.

Just a question for you.
Where is the fuel filter located?
Just a question for you.
Where is the fuel filter located?
It's part of the fuel tap. A gauze filter. Not normally a requirement to change or clean it unless it's had contaminated fuel go through it.
I also forgot to mention the fuel pump as well as the rest of the things I mentioned.

Get youself down to Halfords or another motor factor and buy a tin of Eazystart. You spray it into the carbs. Never fails to get an engine going if you've got a spark.
I would still get some fresh fuel in there as soon as, but it doesn't go off as quickly as everyone thinks!

If there's no fuel getting through the jets then easy start won't make it sustain.
Is there actually fuel getting into the carbs? i.e does the exhaust smell of fuel?

i'll get back about this in the week.
Don't think i can do much now as the battery needs a recovery.
