just thought id let you all know that i wont be riding for the next few weeks. was riding home from having been out for ride down to southhampton on sunday [27th] when we had got back to basingstoke i came off on a roundabout [hita patch of something slippery, managed to stay on, but then the bike got caught in a fairly deep rut. which fired me into the crash barrier. therefore i ended up in hospital. mate who was ridng behind me and saw everything stoped and rushd over [id hit the barrier and flipped over the central reservaion] a very nice lady came rusing over immeadiatly after too- calling an ambulance and telling me not to move. to cut a long story short ended up having both bones in right leg broke- below the knee and lost a fair amount of blood . had surgery sun night to have a pin hammered into the big bone, and surgery again yesterday to check it clean it and close the wound. other than that no other injuries. just hoping to get out of hospital soon. policeman who turned up were wel impressed with all the ridng gear- esp the back protector. hate to have knon what couldve been damagd without it.

i will ride again at somepoint in the future. looking back at what happened there was othing much i could;ve really done about it. was riding stupidly, or dangerously only goin about 20mph on a fair sized roundabout, wasnt trying to get knee down or anthing. was just riding home from a good day out with a mate, and got caught out by a piece of appaling road surface:( oh well it couldve been worse though i guess

+1 to what the ape said. Anything we can do let us know and which hospital as i'm sure we will want to come and pay you a visit. When are you expected to get out, as we're going to need your home address as well.

Rideout to Reading(?) hospital anyone? :)

James I just read this man, what an unfortunate thing to happen, really sorry to hear about your smashed leg. PM me which hospital you are in and when we can come visit, I might be able to annoy you for an hour with my presence. You are one of the best riders I have ridden with (you kept up with Stu!) so I fully beleive there was little you could have done if it was just a random slippery patch. Here's hoping you get a very speedy recovery.

Holy crap dude, hope you get better soon and as an added incentive you should aim to be back on the road for my b-day rideout/bbq (http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=103679) That gives you about 2 and a half months but as always you never know how long its going to take.

the food aint as bad as it used to be. hope your home soon and the bikes not too badly damaged. If you need anything to help get it back together ive got some bits curvy that might be of use.

So whats the plan RE visiting....does anyone want to go to the hospital this evening, or are we waiting for him to go home first?

Things to factor in include:

Hospital: Possibility of seeing attractive nurses(although in my experience they're mostly a myth)
We can eat his grapes.
Chance to steal uniforms and strut around the hospital showing everyone our PHD's. (pretty huge d****)

Home: We can eat the food in his house
We won't contract MRSA or whatever flesh eating bacteria is currently all the rage in the NHS.

Stig
31-01-08, 02:34 PM
I wanted to visit today but have had my plans scuppered. If anyone is thinking of going in the car, can they come by my way and pick me up :?:

Having just come out of an NHS hospital, I probably already have MRSA so if James doesn't have yet I could always oblige and pass it on.

yeah i know i hadn't been on much since new year, just been busy lately. though i was hoping to make it down to the next shire horse meet. that may have to wait a while now. nick- doctors said about 12weeks to fully heal, though i guess i am a rather finely tuned athletic machine:p so hopefully be quicker! lol. what made it worse the other day was i kept hearing bikes go past the hospital, whilst i'm stuck in bed grrr. on a positive note, i think my all important white boots manged to survive :D so does this make me a member of the wonky knee club???

As the bikes still in storage at the moment until the insurance move it to a repair centre, my dad went out yesterday to have a look at it/bring back some stuff which was under the pillion seat.
He reckons that considering the crash the bikes not too bad- mainly cosmetic damage- lower fairings smashed, front indi's hanging off tho still attached, both mirrors off, no visiable damage to frame, engines not leaking, end-can nicely dented, crash post bent upwards, and both left and right rear sets not attached anymore.

So doesn't sound too bad... it's just when it comes down to it whether the insurance feel that it'll cost too much to repair or not..

Will post some pics sometime soon.

And starting to feel better too now, although the leg is still fairly painful, might start wanting to see some of you lot sometime soon too ;) or if anyone feels like popping over..

There were 19 staples down the centre of the knee, but then there were also staples around by my ankle, and at other places around the lower leg. So probs getting on for about 30 I think altogether.

Was the pin inside the bone then for you? As I think the only way of removing my pin would be to smash the bone open, and take it out!

Pains not that bad now, got painkillers, but mostly been staying off of them, as don't really need them that often now.

Think I had 14 down my knee, took ages for tingly sensation on the knee to go away, guess that's where they've cut the nerves or something.

Yes, I had pin thru tibia and only 4 screws (2 to hold top, 2 lower). Had local to remove the lower screws and finally had operation last August to remove the pin. Had mixed opinions from different doctors about removing it, but one doctor actually suggested I have it removed if I was intending on continuing with snowboarding/biking where the chances of breaking it again is greater. Apparently it would be x10 more messy to have another break with it in.

Was really surprised how quick the removal operation was, think it was only about 1/2 hour and I got to keep the pin :smt118
