Yeah- Dream Theater are very technical- lots of key/time signature changes as well as light and shade (as Jimmy Page might put it!).
I wouldn't class Satriani or Vai as Metal per se- though some of their stuff is verging on heavy. Some of Satch's stuff is pretty out there too- but he seems happier with more blues based (and accessible!) stuff than Mr Vai. I'll get my head around the pitch axis system at some point!
In Satch's Guitar Secrets book (compilation of his columns for Guitar magazine), he has a couple of thrash excercises and quotes Lydian, Dorian, Hungarian and Symmetrical scales for practice. He has done some stuff with whole note scale too (think this is symmetrical scale. thinking about it) and he does favour the Lydian scale in his melodies.
I still think that Passion & Warfare is Vai's best- he never seems to have quite equalled it and some of his stuff is verging on muzak. Great though- the Sound Theories Live DVD is fantastic- having it all with an orchestra really shows his talent at arranging and (co) scoring his stuff.
For more exotic and eastern sounding scales (that do regularly crop up in metal), you could try Ozric Tentacles. Ed Wynne is a fantastic guitarist- quite likes the Indian/Egyptian orientated scales too. Erpland, The Hidden Step and Become The Other are all great examples (not really heavy, but quite psychedelic and a little dance/trance tinged too if you can cope with that stuff. Me? I love it!).

agree with aplinestarhero. A lot of the progressive metal out there is very impressive and technical. I saw dream theater live a few times, and they were simply awesome (not just cos they were live but you appreciate their technical skills much more).
Aand furthermore, the speed at which some metal outfits can guitar and drum at is beyond belief. I mean anyone who can play a guitar at insane speeds can almost certainly play most things...whereas I would like to see some indy/soft rock bands trying to cover some metal songs..they won't be able to.
Aand if you've ever come across any symphonic metal..well that just takes things to a whole new level!
Fair do's...whizzing up and down and round and round a penta/dorian scales takes a lot of practice, timing and dexterity. What I really miss in Heavy Metal is light and shade, tension and release, and - tasty, yummy notes and harmonies

Certainly from my main interest, drumming, a lot of rock and metal music the drumming is very technical. The art of double bassing itself is a pretty difficult one to master.
However, there are some metal bands who are just noise and they do my head in!

I though that the first minute and a half of this was poo, the drumming seemed out of time with the riffs and his screaming did my head in. didn't mind the drumming and the riffs in the latter part of the track.

I should say that Carol has to go out before I can play that in the house! I am definitely the only lover of Black and Death metal in our street! :smt097

You enjoy it hun - I would never slate anyone for their taste in music (unlike some people on here! ;)) because it's so subjective - I love jazz - late 50s modal stuff Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis et al, and jazz funk - crusaders, herbie hancock et al - my Deep Purple/Led Zep et al loving friends think I've lost the plot, but I love it - I even go to Jazz evening class because there is so much complex theory involved
Oh - and no one will believe that my OH (who is a typical hairy biker!) went clubbing in Ibiza on a stag weekend! ever since I've had to put up with drum and bass or whatever it's called! :x so I just drown him out with my Sax

A dear friend of mine and I used to go to a Jazz club on Sunday evenings because it was really chilled out and was a nice place to sit and drink with out having to fight off chav blokes.
I really got into Billy Holiday a while back and she is on the Jazz side of Blues in some songs, not that I know very much about it all. :D

I have loved Marduk since Opus Nocturne, which blew me away. The closing track "The Sun Has Failed" is a monster. As for the babies, I am afraid that if you did, I would have to eat them! :smt077
My Black Metal Collection is fairly stuck in the 90's, but things do seem to have tamed somewhat these days. Maybe since Varg (hate his politics, love his music) was released a new extreme Burzum album will hit us in the heart. :smt074
Not heard much from Akercocke recently and am praying that a new album from them will be coming soon. Was not massively keen on AntiChrist, it lacked the aggression and edge of previous works for me. Have loved them since Album one and can't decide if David Gray is the second or third most gorgeous drummer ever. He may tie it with Frost of Satyricon. :smt054
In case you are wondering, the sexiest drummer ever for me is Carol from Oestrogenix (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wshRu9FasHo) (my other half's Band). :smt118

everyone likes this band, the music is sooo happy, you can't help but get drunk and dance to it
I started off listening to heavy and power metal, and never thought I'd get into growling vocals. Then I did. My 2 fave genres would be
Melodic Death Metal (COB/In Flames/Kalmah, etc)
Viking/Folk Metal (Eluvieite, Korpiklaani, Moonsorrow, etc)
The thing is, once you don't mind the growling vocals, you really are opening yourself up to a whole new world of superb musical genius!
On the whole not a massive fan of female vocals too, but it can work very well.
Therion use it sometimes very well...

Think il still go though, last few years have been pretty epic, n well even if some of the bands a bit pants doesnt really bother me as there are normally awsome bands to make up for it!

This I like a lot! Reminds me of Windir and Bathory. That female fronted tat is just the complete opposite of heavy metal though. This weekend we were driving back from Birmingham, 5 metallers in a car at 3am, remains of kebabs from Kebabland and empty crates of beer, all headbanging to City by SYL. If you'd have been on a motorway bridge and seen us in a homage to Wayne's World flying past with Delain emanating from the car it would have been a total farce. Its just not metal. Its pop with guitars.

how's about this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vfxjf_7yZVQ .
Reminds me of Anthrax and Slayer.
So is this like thrash?
I like it :)
yep that's real thrash here's another of their newerish stuff just audio though still really cool though http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NnPHSOxrWg&feature=related
That song reminds me of Avenged Sevenfold. :nomore:
what sound's nothing like that faggy crap.
just got the new megadeth album endgame if you like megadeth get it it's ****ing lethal very heavy very angry typical dave mustaine.
It all went downhill after risk if you ask me.
yes risk suck's monkey's testicles that was the record companies fault i think dave was in a really bad place back then but their last three have been amazing you should really give them another chance their on the top of their game now and the new guitar player chris broderick is really good too.
