Any heavy metal fans? Anyone like children of bodom?

They got a new album out soon (forgot when) and I, for one, am ruddy excited.

Makes me wanna blow my next loan installment on a new pointy guitar

I think it's sometime around the 8th it comes out. Got it pre-ordered so jus gotta wait for it. Heard most of the songs from it on youtube. Sounds pretty good. Seems like it's going to be better then 'Are You Dead Yet'

*raises devil horns* yup :)

I have loved CoB for a long time now but went off them pretty quickly when they released "Are you dead Yet?" and "Hate Crew Deathroll". They seem to be succumbing to the classic In Flames/Soilwork scandinavian metal decline that is happening at the moment. I will check out the new album, but I don't hold my breath.

Anyone getting into them, get albums like Hatebreeder or Follow the Reaper.
Here is Downfall off hatebreeder: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbr89uDTr9Y
or Kissing the Shadows off Follow the Reaper: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72SA5wDWThM check out the alternating guitar and keyboard solos at the end!!

And anyway, I rate Wintersun as a much better, darker, faster version of CoB ;)

No of course they are not goths. Typical ignorance there. Depends which songs you looked at as to whether they are good or bad in my opinion.

High pitched screamy singing is black metal, not goths. Goths are people who dress in black and mope around being all depressed, and goth music is slow and bumbly, often electronic, like Sisters of Mercy or Type O Negative etc. Fast guitar-driven screamy stuff is black metal. Remember, not all black-wearing metallers are goths, I actually find goths to be quite the opposite to how I am. Metal is uplifting and triumphant, goths are just mopey. :)

Would you recommend them?

Yes, they are from finland, home of the heaviest of all the heavy rock :king:

If you would like to buy an album, I reccomend "follow the reaper". The first four tracks alone are just awesome. You'll be breathless by track 5, if you mosh and air guitar as hard as i do :D

Children of bodom do suck on the vocal's front, granted...I nearly didnt bother getting into them based on the vocals, but the instrumental blew me away, so much faster, harder and heavier than anything else I had listened to at that point. I don't like genre's (isnt metal and then heavy metal enough?) but they are not the typical "goth" band. I think of them as heavy trash metal, if I had to genre-lize them.

The story surrounding their name is pretty cool aswell

A mate of mine got me into Devin Townsend in general a while back. He is insane. Brilliant though. Does everything from pop rock to psychotic metal. One of the SYL songs 'Oh My F**king God' nearly sent me mad. In a good way :D

Another good band (although I have not heard very much of them) are Zimmers Hole. Two of the blokes from SYL make up the members. Sheer comedy metal.

You sir have excellent taste 8). I love Strapping Young Lad, from listening to Detox on my headphones when walking back drunk from the pub, to the quite sublime "The New Black" album, which really surprised me in still being very good albeit not as heavy as "City". Saw them in Rock City in about 2001 I think, bloody awesome! Devin is the master of MASSIVE sound!

That's always true, although I have always preferred the likes of (old obviously) Metallica and Megadeth to Slayer. All bloody good fun though!

If anyone wants to hear some more good thrash form a current English band, try Hospital of Death, from oop North. Funny, fast, good, and the whole album is available as a free download!

:smt020 I listem to them myself when swaying down the road home from a few jars. Splendid! The New Black is a great album, but I think City remains the king. Mind you, The New Black has a proper recorded version of Far Beyond Metal.

Been there done it and got the t shirt and petuna oiled leather with sleeveless denim on top about 20 years ago.

Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Saxon to name a few, and of course the masters...

AC/DC. (C'mon guys, just ONE more tour pleeeeeeeeeeeeeease.....)

These days it all seems a bit shouty, or maybe I'm getting old. But I cant be because the old stuff still sends a shiver down my spine....

Oh, and how about an Air Guitar championship at AR08??? I personally take mine everywhere....

'tallica, Maiden, Sabbath - totally agree on (bit meh with AC/DC)

Children of Bodom IMO are awesome..saw them live a few times and they were great. Vocals are the weak point, but the heaviness, the riffs and some of the keyboard work is brilliant and easily makes up!...

I have quite eclectic music taste, loving anything that is interesting or unusual. It is true that my main love is Black Metal, but I also love many other forms of Music. Try these for fun.

Lisa Lashes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGlxNtp-7C4) For when I need speed and dancing.

Hagalaz Runedance (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-AE50otuVA) :sunny: Anti Christian Nordic folk.

Front Line Assembly (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jd0Mb1af5h8) :D Industrial that makes you realise NIN are for kids.

Enslaved (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGOHk2J4jV4) :smt077 My current favourite Black Metal Band from Norway.

John Lee Hooker (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOyj4ciJk34) :-dd Because there are days when I got the blues.

I love metal, the darker the better for me. I have been into Black metal since the early 90's and have seen Cradle of Filth, Opeth and Madder Mortem, however I would sell my Granny into Prostitution if it meant I could see Enslaved and Emperor. :smt077

Nice...never heard their stuff before, but thats a nice song. I love my folk metal (Eluveitie, Korpiklaani, Ensiferum to name but a few). Gonna listen to more Hagalaz Runedance though me thinks!

A lot of people don't realise some of the good and varied types of metal that has evolved over the last decade+. Its not either heavy metal or nu metal. There's plenty of good stuff out there. I don't know too much black metal, as I mainly listen to Heavy metal, power metal, melodic death metal and folk metal.

Ever heard of Hollenthon? I think they're considered Black, and all the instruments are played by one guy will you believe!!)

I'm just loading up Needled 24/7 for a gander now (the folks' interweb connection is fecking slow- it's being away from the Big Smoke I reckon!).

I like some metal- Maiden, 'tallica, Sabbath, Dream Theater, but I really don't get on with growly vocals. I tried some Testament a while back and think I could just about manage that, but I do prefer the more melodic singing.

Having said that, I was well impressed with Opeth at Progressive Nations last month- nice switchning from "Aaaarrrgh" to "aaaaaaaah" type vocals- and he's a very funny bloke too.

I got Dream Theater's first album a few weeks ago (Finally!)- really wasn't expecting much from the reviews and comments about the old singer, but was really impressed. Much as I think James Labrie is a far better addition to the band, the original singer had a real 'Rush' type sound. The mix on the album is a touch muddy though- bass definately loses out.

Big Elf were ace too- really rocked. More of a Deep Purple thing though than a 'metal' thing.

So- how about recommending me some thrash with more melodic singing than growling/distorted screaming?

Variety is the spice of life and all that. What do you like?

I like just about everything except heavy metal and reggae. I detest both genres with a passion.

Trouble with Megadeth though...is that Dave Mustaine is in the band!!

I have Rust In Peace on LP (but no longer a record deck)- was OK, but never felt compelled to get it on CD. I once borrowed So Far, So Good, So What... off a friend- thought it was the biggest loade of shoite I'd ever heard. Have they actually done anything properly heavy since Rust...? That's worth listening to?

Metallica's last album is a real return to form- probably their best since Justice.

Niice!

I never managed to get into megadeth. They have the odd good song I like but not a fan. I recommend a band called Exodus for any thrash people out there http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVxeiFWcmdY

Also, for any people who are into there epic 8 minute+ type metal songs, have a listen to some material by Moonsorrow. Awesome band, and they have very few weak songs

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZRXEje4Xl8 (epic song)!!

I take it back - there is someone with a clue about music posting in this thread.

The Damned - best band you'll ever hear.

But not really heavy metal, are they?

Jeez, I can remember when they were playing on the back end of the punk era.

No, not at all, which explains my surprise to hear them mentioned.

Back end? The Damned are the originals, they released the first British Punk single, New Rose, in 1976.

You'll find most metal heads do have a clue about music...I usually find its the non metal heads that don't!;)

Currently listening to some EPIC songs by a band called Iced Earth. Though if you haven't heard them before then you can't know any better. I'd say a lot of people brand all metal as the same, based on a few things theyve heard in the past perhaps, without realising how much good varied metal there is out there.

If you like guitars/drums/basses/and good clean vocals (not screeching), then I guarantee there will be metal out there that you would like.

tbh the only types of music I can't stand is R&B/hip-hop/garage, but im sure some people on here like that stuff..so each to their own!

I mean i'll listen to all sorts. Pink Floyd...Santana?:smt033

matt barlow or ripper owens.

thulfi

Well actually my fave album is Night of the Stormrider, so gotta go with John Greely.

But Barlow is pretty much Iced Earth no? - Burnt Offerings a very close 2nd, then Dark Saga. Though I was just listening to the epic tracks at the end of the Glorious Burden...awesome, but all about the old skul Iced Earth IMHO.

i do think barlow is iced earth as good as owens is he doesnt gel right with the band's sound.

bloody hell, this is an old thread

I'm starting to play more guitar again :smt054 I have learned alot about musical composition etc through listening to heavy metal. I think when you sit and listen very carefull to a song, hear for the differant harmonies two gutiars might be playing, listen for the bass carefully, how the drum patterns are going, there is alot of very technical stuff going on

sometimes though, its just double bass peddles as fast as possible and mega-awesome-chunking palm-muting on the open top E.

Let loose!

Lots of minor/dorian and pentatonic scales and arpegios in Heavy Metal I would say? fairly straightforward I would think? ;)

depends what you listen too I suppose, but there is some inventive stuff from the likes of Michael Romeo (Symphony X). Joe satriani has skillzzzz but he dosn't really experiment with alot of stuff. Vai is very experimental, sometimes I feel that he wants a song to be great, but it ends up just sounding a bit weird

agree with aplinestarhero. A lot of the progressive metal out there is very impressive and technical. I saw dream theater live a few times, and they were simply awesome (not just cos they were live but you appreciate their technical skills much more).

Aand furthermore, the speed at which some metal outfits can guitar and drum at is beyond belief. I mean anyone who can play a guitar at insane speeds can almost certainly play most things...whereas I would like to see some indy/soft rock bands trying to cover some metal songs..they won't be able to.

Aand if you've ever come across any symphonic metal..well that just takes things to a whole new level!
