Just got an email saying that SHARP (http://sharp.direct.gov.uk/) has their first batch of helmet ratings available. Should provide some fuel for the cheap helmets are great/rubbish, why would I pay a million for a brand helmet type arguements.

My HJC CL-ST gets 3 stars. Seems about average then :smt045

Cool, now thats handy to use... The wifes helmet is better then mine with 4 stars for her Shark, while my KBC VR1 gets just 3.

You can even look up the 5 star helmets they have tested so far... At the moment the wins are AGV, Arai, Bell, HJC, Lazer and Shark.

I think loads of folk are going to be saying things like that. Interesting how well some of the "budget" helmets do...

yeah, i have always heard the how much is your head worth routine, and to a certain degree followed it. but this does make you think how much of that money goes towards the name. (i know expensive lids are lighter etc as well)

Hmmmmm, privately run, trying to promote a brand, no details of tests carried out, not sure I'd be using it as a reference myself thank.

Cheers Mark

me too, well thats what it says on the website. from what i can see they dont seem to rate one brand higher than the rest, if you look at the 5 star rated ones theres a real mix

It is an independent government scheme.

My Xr-1000 didn't fair too well, and I think thats the UK's most popular helmet.

it says goverment helmet rating but not who's doing the actual testing, well not that I can find anyway.

Cheers Mark.

Details of the tests are here (http://dft-1-sharp.eduserv.org.uk/about-sharp/) on their website.

I'm not technical enough to understand all the ins and outs, but it looks pretty good to me....

It's interesting that the only Arai to get 5 stars is the GP5x, which is based on their Car racing helmet rather than any of their bike helmets. All the other Arai's get between 3 and 2 ......

However they have missed out the most important factor in choosing a helmet..... "is it a pretty colour/design?" ;)

A full 5 stars for the AGV S4 and it only cost me £159. Can't be bad.

I'm pleased these have just come out cos I was just about to buy a new lid but I think I've changed my mind already!

Better get in quick before the prices change.
:)

Edit: Bu**er me, there's even a 5 star lid with a quick release buckle!

hmm, got a lid a few weeks back and was between the AGV S4 and arai condor, the S4 was nice and looked better was led to beleive the arai was the better helmet, but on the site it only gets 2 stars

How do you find it? Can you PM me so as not to derail too much. I was going for the Shoei XR1000 but after seeing it got three stars I'm not so sure now.
