I am have just rang Crescent Suzuki to get a quote for a service ( 7.5k )
They want £250 + vat.

I am going on a tour round the UK next month for a week.

Question is do I have it serviced now before or after, when I return.

My K4 has only done 5k miles and its last service was March last year. ( 4k )

I am proper skint at the mo.

What do you think?:confused::confused::confused::confused:

Well, its only oil and filter right? You could do that yourself for less than £40 with stuff from halfords...

You need to check the plugs as well for that one, but all the parts don't cost much.

Drop the oil and filter, change the plugs (regardless)

Cost is about ?40

So I would say the money should not be the issue.

The age of the exsisting oil would have me err on changing it before.

If it were me I'd get it done before. That way you know its sorted and also buy getting a garage to do it, if like me you arent very mechanically minded they might pick up on some other stuff to.

I.e when my GSXR went in for its service the other day they warned me that my brake pads dont have a lot of life left in them and my clutch cable is on its last legs, these are things I woudlnt have necessarily noticed had I done a DIY service...

I'm doing a trip to Scotland and another one to France this year as well, so I know that before I go I'll need to get the front pads done, rather than going and wearing them out whilst I'm away and then fretting about getting them changed when I dont know the area that I'm in.

I'm probably being over cautious, but I want to enjoy my long trips rather than worrying about stupid stuff.

Save yourself £210 by changing the oil and filter and check over yourself.... That's all they are going to do.....!!!!!!

I've just saved myself over £400 by doing a full service inc Valve clearances.

I'm not only chuffed, but amazed at actually, if you have a spare afternoon / morning and take your time and its not too taxing!

Defo before.

Peace of mind on your trip.

Set a day aside, a bit of planning/reading up and DIY the filters and plugs and oil.

Have a check of your swingarm/head and wheel bearings too.

That is a terrible quote even for the major major 15k!:(

Rather than pay for a dealer service 2000 miles early, i would either do nothing now and just enjoy the trip, or if you are really worried about it, do as already suggested and change the oil and filter yourself and book it in for the 7500 mile service when its done 7500 miles.

I agree, i would just change the oil, filter and the plugs for £40 before i went, then wait untill the 7.5K point for a service.

When i was approching the 6 month point on the Kwak, i was going to get it done on time but it had only done just under 3K miles and according to milage wasent due untill 4K.

So i emailed Kwak UK and actually got a sensable responce, no sir no need to do any service on time its millage that counts for our bikes.

Happy days, it only delayed the service by a month anyway, its booked in for the 30th of this month and is now showing 4200 miles

Assuming you want the dealer service stamp in the book and aren't a DIYer, I would wait until well after your trip, when the mileage is nearer the actual 7500 mark.

For total peace of mind, change the oil and filter, lube cables and lever pivots before you go, then pack a pair of spark plugs and an AA/RAC recovery membership card (assuming you don't have recovery bundled with your insurance). Buy a recovery membership if you have to - AA/RAC rescue & recovery around ?80 quid, still way cheaper than than the dealer service!

Definately change that "well over a year old" motor oil and filter before you go!
I would change the plugs as well.

Not too hard to do yourself.
Instructions are in your owners manual.
