2. USA - approx 630 athletes competing
3. England - approx 330 athletes competing
4. Auz - approx 430 athletes competing

go team england!

Excuse me, not trying to cause trouble, but I didn't realise england put their own team out...

It's just keithd's bitter that most of the medals have come from his Celtic overlords :laughat:

I had a look in the paper this morning and the total medal counts for bronze, silver and gold across the entire games is different  Can anyone explain why that is? Surely there is a bronze, silver and gold in each event?

The bronze count was the highest - about 25 more than silver and gold.

Had a smile on my face when I saw that the UK was above Australia in ine table this morning!

Think that Boxing and maybe some others award 2 Bronzes - no fight-off for 3rd place.

surely if there is no fight off for 3rd - there should be more gold and silver?

no, because they award 1 each of gold and silver, and 2 bronzes. Four medals for one event.

Wiped the floor in the cycling, due in no small part to Scotlands greatest Olympian, but;

Superb as the cycling, sailing, and rowing have been, is nobody else a bit sad that our medals aren't a bit more evenly spaced across other events (judo, archery, shooting, volleyball and all the others)?

I think Athletics is hugely disappointing considering there seems to be so many events (and the main focus of the games)

A lot of focus will be on the Cycling team over the next 4 years, from the likes of Clive Woodward, to see where they have made the difference and where they can apply this to the other disciplines to increase our successes.

The main difference seems to be a lack of willingness to accept anything other than Gold in cycling and sailing etc whereas some of the track and field athletes seem to be happy just to make finals.

There's an interesting article on the BBC website about how the cycling team achieved this:

Our hamburger-eating cousins across the pond have a slightly different (eccentric) take on the medal table (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/olympics/2008/medals/tracker/). Apparently, they are leading it! :smt103

Im getting really anoid with the olimpics after the 400m mens race yesturday after the americans came first second and third!!! of coarse they are going to be up top with three competitors racing!! it should be one competitor from one country in each event, with a backup person incase they cannot compete!! this is why they are soo far ahead! grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

rant over

simesb
22-08-08, 08:48 AM
There is a qualifying standard they have to meet before they can enter the olympics - if the americans have 3 of that standard then why not; surely the point of the olympics is to compete against the best in the world, not just the best from each country.

And we would have fewer medals, as several time (at least twice in the cycling, and the womens marathon swim) we have had two on the podium.

oh yea both men and women both look like they never practised together!! ha ha ha. just a shame our blokes faffed up as we stood a good chance.
i agree with the fact that its the best of the best, but especially when you get the rankings in the medal table, it does make it look like its country vs country. which i think it should be...much more competition! i watched the cycling when we won both gold and silver, and even though it was us, i still thought it was a bit off!

also reckon they should have the "super-human" olympics, where drug users compete against each other :p would be very good to watch!!

So a great solid result of 4th - under both criteria especially as it means we beat Australia, who were also trying to claim the bet was regarding total medals.

The US still claim they won http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/olympics/2008/08/25/medals.race.ap/index.html?eref=sircrc  and almost appear magnanimous in acknowledging China's performance, while it must have hurt them so much to have to have a dig at Russia.
