servicing gsxr usd forks.

got a pair of gsxr750 srad forks off of ebay a while back, and while im still waiting for parts thought i would strip them down and service them. managed to get the top tube off, but the damper rod and the bolt at the bottom of the leg (10mm allen key) are not coming out. i tried loosening it before i started stripping them, no luck, so i thought there might have been a way inside to loosen in all up. i cant seem to sort it out. anyone know of an online manual or knwo how to do it??? really cheesing me off at the mo. the bolt just turns.

You'll need a special tool to hold the damper rod assembly in place while you undo the bolt through the bottom of the leg, I believe.

When I did the fork seals on my ZX7 I had to buy one off eBay.

just had a browse on ebay, it looks litke thats the case. hmmmm, might be able to make something which will work.......

Yeah, I thought that... tried all sorts but in the absence of a machine shop at the time, I was left with just buying the damn thing. It's only a bit of tube with a few little cutouts on the ends, and a bar. It fits a variety of fork types including KYB, Ohlins, and Showa, apparently. Was about a tenner.

Why do you want to remove damper rod?

just had a look at the bottom of the fork and its a rather large hexagonal internal tool i need. tried using some spark plug wrenches but i only had one deep enough but it was too small.
im just bored and wanted to give it a good service. make sure everything is in top form.

also how much oil is required in the forks?? i think there was an absence of oil in the forks previously as they were really really spongy. unless they have really soft springs. ive got a load of 15wt oil which i'll try first.

I reckon 15 will be too hard, I think I've got 7.5 in my 600 SRAD ones.

like i said it was really really soft to begin with. its the only oil ive got in the garage, so im not too fussed if i need to buy some more, as its technically free. it could be the old mans, but never mind!!

When i done my zx7 forks i never need a special tool.
