The conservation bit comes in, with the shooting syndicates, in the "shoot" I was a member of near Keighley we were active all year round in providing good wildlife husbandry, for example planting "cover crops" like kale mustard and rape to provide shelter for ground dwelling birds like Grouse / Pheasant, shooting predators like foxes, and stocking-up on buying in 1000 or so poults, (young pheasants) and rearing them in a safe enviroment with large keep nets, providing fresh food and water daily, to rear healthy strong birds (admitedly - to later release and shoot), however not all of the 1000 or so poults gets shot or killed by predators, many many escape into other privately owned land and breed sucessfully in the wild to hopefully increase local'ish population, hence the conservation connection.........;)
Been playing today.....
Dave is the last pic a beretta? Always wanted one of them.

a pair of BSA Scorpions a MK1 & a MK2 ;)
I used to shoot one of those, big heavy beast, always felt incredibly powerful for an air pistol, I suspect that's why you don't see many of them around now.

Yeah you're right, the original Mk1's with the all-steel safety catch were originally over the legal limit of 6ft/lb and were withdrawn from sale for a slight re-design to become the MK2, with the steel/plastic safety catch & machined scope rail...... Mk2's are right on the legal limit themselves!! ;)

Holy cow .....Dude that's some serious Brass ...
Unfortunately it's been getting real expensive shooting brass like that here.
I get paid to use them, so the cost isn't an issue for me.

Yeap, we acquired them from our American cousins (SEAL's).
I personally use a H&K USP, I have never had any issues with this sidearm in my career.

ive heard all the arguments from shooters many times. :)
pretty much, its " if we cant shoot, then there will be no need for woods, hedgerows" etc " we maintain woods, hedgerows, to encourage animals/birds to breed .so we can shoot them".
why not, do all the work with the woods etc, encourage wildlife to flourish, and leave it?
shooters (of this kind) just like shooting animals/birds, its got nothing to do with caring for the wildlife.
its just like the (fox) hunting fraternity. for years they were on the "hunting is conservation" rant, until it got banned ,and they were just going on about job losses, and their "right to hunt" being breached.

So as you assume since you expect other people to tend to wildlife for no other reason for the warm fuzzy feeling it gives them, I expect you spend much of your free time doing the same?

Foxes are and contuniue to be hunted though. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the "hunting of foxes with hounds" has been banned. Foxes continue to be a pest. Why? One example, because foxes kill for the sake of killing - not solely food. If a fox got into a hen house, it would kill every single hen in there. For rather obvious reasons, this isn't great for the farmer.
Looking at your avatar, you seem to have no issues with tearing up natural habitats on a MX bike.

Personally I don't like fox hunting, setting dogs on seems like cheating. I'd rather use an FAC air rifle and require a bit of skill about it, but that's just doing it for the sake of it. Doing it for pest control sake I'd use a 223 and a night sight and do it humanely and efficiently. Foxes are brutal little gits and a pain in the rse no matter how cute and fluffy they are, whatever some rsehole hippy says from the comfort of city center apartment.

I've worked on a farm, and seen it first-hand, Foxes kill everything they can confidently tackle, and just leave it, families of barn kittens, the LOT!!!!

Sat in the Dungeon today talking to our boys in Afghanistan, the CO advised me to have a break from the comms equipment and relax for an hour (I am a quarter of the way through my 24/7 working for four weeks).
So I had another play....
The XM is a refurb, a veteran of Desert Storm and confined to the armoury, The P226 is something we acquired and not a weapon we particularly like to use our selfs. The USP is my personal sidearm which has been in service with me since 1999, my trusted back up weapon has never let me down....

im trying to point out they only do it so they can blast stuff to pieces. if they cant blast it to pieces, they wont do it.

fox hunting still happens, yes, im not debating that. those people feel above the law.
i dont buy in to "foxes are a pest" rhetoric. IF foxes really are that bad, secure your chickens properly, its not hard.
its ironic tho, how foxes are bad for killing chickens, when, chickens are only reared to be killed.

many "hippies" live in the countryside.
foxes are no more a pest than humans are.

oh dear................
this si the rhetoric i was tlaking about couple posts up!
ive heard some mad hunt supporter tell us before "ive seen a fox bring a fully grown cow down". two problems with that. a fox couldnt physically bring a cow down, and secondly, cows NEVER (in farmed circumstances) become fully grown.

Is it your livelihood being damaged by them though?
This is getting tedious for a thread which was supposed to be about enjoying a game.

Then you have animal friendly hippies that don't want to see the Chickens locked up, ever heard of free range? Foxes are a pest, even the urban foxes, and they pray on more than Chickens also.
I don't hunt animals, my use of weapons is for military purposes, but I have no problems with people doing so as long as it is safe and controlled.

So you admit that Foxes are pests, after all the large majority of us humans do not look after our country side either making us a pest to those that do.

So what? There is no such thing as a totally selfless act. The fact is they're doing something useful, unlike you who's just whining about others because you don't approve of their motives. The worst kind of hypocrite.
