As most folk on here are UK based, you're not likely to get too many folks with a big arsenal. The forces guys don't count, they're not their guns ;-)

Yeah the firearms laws here are strict to say the least. Pistols are right out, airguns are power limited, shotguns are limited to 2 shot mags, rifle's are very tightly controlled.

Guns for sport, Yes - Guns for home protection, No.

I can see why farmers have shotguns around, to keep vermin levels down, but they have no place in a residential situation and should not be kept at home.

In my opinion sporting guns should be kept at in secure and well alarmed armouries at Police approved and monitored gun clubs, or in the police armoury. If anything we should have even tougher gun control in this country.

I've got a Beeman .177 air pistol, used to use it with my mate when i was in scouts back in the days. Harmless bit of fun unless you were a Rat :D .. We used it on the range at the camps we went on. Wasted a few hours trying to out do each other. Supprising how powerful they are, it fires 410ft per second so spec says!! Don't use it now, only for tins in back garden now and again!! Nothing compared to your American bang sticks!!!

I've not got any myself, but in August I was in the states and went off to a shooting range to learn how to handle/shoot  :D

I've now fired pistols of the 9mm, 40, 45 variety, and a shot on a 44 Magnum (think that's the one - not sure why the calibre is smaller than the 45 but I assume it's a longer bullet or something - it was definitely more powerful!).

First off i didn't purchase this gun for self defense , this is my new Competition Skeet /Sporting Clays gun , i am licensed a well capable of following regulations , being a member of 2 local Clubs (very well regulated) we often have sanctioned comp days , this is a hobby that many enjoy and may i say it's a blast (Don't forget that target shooting is also an Olympic Sport , so how are you going to go to the Olympics without practicing )

Anyway , i thought that Sporting Clays originated in the UK.. way back when ..

I have.... a Remminton 12 guage pump action, a Remminton .22 LR rifle, and...an original 1851 Navy Colt.

... along with a few various other firearms that either the government doesn't or shouldn't know about. :-$

Used to be a sharpshooter at one time (rifle) as well as doing some "trick shooting" with a hand gun... back in the day.
Not really in to it now. Seems to only bring up bad war memories.

For the last 15 years or so... the only shooting I do is to kill varmits on the property.

Yeah, double checked last night afterwards :D I thought it was that, just never really thought about the numbers before hence the confusion (just always thought 9mm < 40 < 45< 44 which when I then thought about, was confusing ). I have the casing from the Magnum shot (I only fired it the once) as a souvenir - it's *definitely* a lot bigger than the 9mm/40/45 (saw those many times as we had to load our own magazines of course).

Yeah, but you interrupted a thread just talking about guns with a completely off-topic question, then randomly insulted americans. If it'd be rude in a real life conversation, it's rude on the internet. If you want to start a thread about why people own guns, you can do that, without derailing other people's conversations- but you'll have to do it without the random unprovoked insults.

Common misconception , I've had a friend of mine who i took to the club as a shooting guest , his comments earlier in the day, he claimed these words "what's the big deal you just aim in the general direction , you can't miss".
Well he shot 2 events at 100 rounds each and managed to break 4 clays...I was lmao

Not really, I do this stuff for a living so I know my firearms.

It is the easiest form of target shooting, if you have no hope of hitting a target doing this then you have no hope at all. I didn't mean it can be done by anyone, there is still some skill involved but not as much as other sports/hobbies/professions.

northwind
06-10-08, 06:18 PM
Hmm, I've shot pistols on ranges and shotguns at clays, the range shooting was far easier because of the lack of movement. Seems that it's just a different type of difficulty though, range shooting requires good accuracy but allows long aim times, clays need less accuracy but you need to act that much faster. I was crap at clays :D

Yes, but it's a good laugh, though I found 22 quite easy to be hitting 90-95/100 in comparison. I'd rather do practical pistol or maybe longer range with rifle, but there's no chance of that here.

why do people feel the need for guns anyway?
To defend your country, every day of the year there are SBS teams deployed around the UK on standby to deal with any attack whether terrorist or not against the UK or the UK's interests. During this time the service is carrying out surveillance work on key terrorist targets, the sole purpose is to find the weakest link and prevent anything from ever happening.

We will not stand back and allow the events of 7th July 2005 and 30th June 2007 to repeat, we will fight fire with fire.

Guys i wasn't offended by this post at all , in fact Stanie makes some very valid points

I'll start with the first question....there is no real need to own a gun , it is simply a matter of preference because the law does allow us the right to bear arms (it's in the constitution) ...legally and licensed of course , when it comes down to criminals all laws do not apply to them so they will obtain and use weapons without care at all (hence Stupid Americans).

Second question ......no one needs to protect themselves from thieves , murderers ect.. any sharp or blunt object will do if someone tries to break into my house and kill us all and at the same time i would not hesitate to use my guns to defend myself (in my own house) .
Point being it does not take a gun for a murderer to break into your house and kill you while sleeping , heck he could do it with the very knife you just used to cut up your dinners steak two hours earlier ...

Guns don't kill people .....people kill people (using any object and at any time)

Heh - well I suspect it's a similar story all over the USA, but I was in California, and Nevada I think is actually more relaxed (more later on).

Basically you have same rights as a US citizen with respect to going to a shooting range and popping off a few rounds ;) - not sure about ownership, as you probably need to be registered somewhere/have ID such as driving licence, etc.

They won't let you just go on the range having never fired a gun, so be sure to phone ahead and pre-arrange some training (which will cost extra of course) - they all seem to have instructors, it's just when they are available. More at once is cheaper, I think (we had 5 of us).

It was about $70 for 2 hours+ (it was open really) training which included classroom time learning about the basic bits of a gun and very importantly how to handle a gun so you don't go shooting yourself or someone else by accident when moving about. It also included unlimited range time afterwards (it was empty at the time though), and one box of ammo (50 rounds) which is worth about $18. And rental of the gun too, naturally!

Now I'm "qualified" to walk into a range and go straight on :D which is kinda cool (ok, it's nothing compared to some on here, but I liked it ;)). Although worryingly they literally just ask you if you've had experience, no checking/proof, etc, so you could lie - but you'd be soon found out I guess.

One thing that is banned in California are fully automatic weapons (i.e. hold trigger down, multiple bullets fly out - manual & semi-auto is ok) - so that rules out uzis and the like.

However...Nevada, they are legal, we thought about popping to Vegas (4 hours drive) so we could experience that, haha. But decided against it in the end.

If you want to find a range...just look at a Yellow Pages equivalent, or Google them...there's plenty about :D

As in , is it legal and possible for tourists to go shoot in any of these states?

Tell us a story Muffles..........

:)

If you want to shoot guns go on holiday to prague, I had stag party details come in my door where one of the activities was to shoot a massive range of guns from .50 mounted machine guns to Ak47's

Was pretty cheap as well.

Part of me would worry that they are going to turn round and rob me at gun point.

I'll start with the first question....there is no real need to own a gun , it is simply a matter of preference because the law does allow us the right to bear arms (it's in the constitution) [quote]

No,no,no,no,no,no.

Guns don't kill people........ Rappers do. I saw it in a documentary on BBc2

If you'd like to go shooting in the UK, legally!

http://www.basc.org.uk/

http://www.nra.org.uk/

Join a club, serve your probation period 3-6 months, during which time you'll learn to become a safe, considerate, target shooter and then you can apply for a FAC to own firearms of your own. Although if you just want to remain a member of a club and shoot their guns that's fine. If you're landed gentry and have enough space to shoot you can get rifles on ticket for vermin control quite easily.

If shotgun shooting sports are your thing, there are plenty of clubs that will give lessons or just let you have a go, for a fee of course.

http://www.clayshooting.co.uk

Owning a shotgun in the UK is quite simple, have a safe place to secure the shotgun, fill in a form, pay 50 quid and wait for the police fellow to come around and view your security. Unlike firearms, you do not need a reason. It's up to the police to prove you'd be a danger to the public. Shotguns have a limited magazine for pumps and semis, but you can own as many as will fit in your safe.

Holy cow .....Dude that's some serious Brass ...
Unfortunately it's been getting real expensive shooting brass like that here (that's the reason for selling all of my hand guns) For a box of fifty 357 rounds it costs around $50 US dollars , it's getting ridiculous and unaffordable and with the economy going into depression it's good bye to brass:(.

Just had a 12 Bore clearout, had a Browning Medallist 28" Multichoke o/under, for Skeet/Trap/sporting. AYA Yeoman s/side, for Grouse/Driven Pheasant/rough shooting (so much lighter than a o/under when your carryin' it all day long) 1903 Westley Richards s/side boxlock & a 1898 Carr Brothers Huddersfield 30" Hammer Damascus s/side....

got 4 air pistols aswell, a Webley Tempest, Daisy 717 Powerline (sidelever pump) & a pair of BSA Scorpions a MK1 & a MK2 ;)
